Once Layla had rested long enough, she got back to her feet. She failed to notice two males standing beneath the shade of a nearby tree, each carrying a food-filled bucket.

George pouted, “I knew it. Liam rushed off just so he could curry favor with her. Wiping sweat off Layla’s forehead is nothing special-I could have done that, too.”

His voice dripped with jealousy.

Oliver shot him a sideways glance and let out a cold snort. “Look how clumsy you were earlier. You would have only gotten in her way. Liam is far more reliable than you. Let’s just deliver this food and head back quietly.”

George frowned, still unsatisfied. He then strolled slowly over toward Layla.

Layla caught sight of them out of the corner of her eye, a hint of surprise crossing her face. She smiled, “What are you two doing all the way out here?”

George held up his wooden food container like he was presenting a precious gift.

Shane had hand-built the square wooden box after Layla had mentioned needing one a short time ago. He had finished it surprisingly fast.

Layla’s stomach rumbled with hunger. She glanced at the last small patch of farmland and hesitated, weighing her choices.

Should I finish my work first, or eat dinner before going back to it?

Liam lifted his head and winked at her. “Go ahead and eat. I can handle this tiny section by myself.”

He had proven himself dependable many times before.

Liam got straight back to work. Layla decided not to argue and sat down nearby to eat her meal at a relaxed pace.

The food tasted wonderful. She was served mushroom-braised meat and crispy herb fritters.

Judging by how well-prepared the dish looked, Carson was almost certainly the one who had

cooked it.

Layla was nearly finished eating by the time Liam wrapped up the remaining chores.

He walked over to her, gently took the empty food container from her hands, and helped her stand back up.

George and Oliver exchanged a quick look, then hurried over to join them.

Liam glanced over at Layla walking beside him. A soft spark flickered in his eyes. He reached over and took her hand without drawing attention to the movement.

Warmth spread across Layla’s palm. She lifted her head and met Liam’s gaze.

She smiled softly, then laced her fingers firmly through his.

Liam’s heart beat fast inside his chest, and his Adam’s apple bobbed once.

“Thank you for everything you have done these past few days,” Layla said quietly.

Alongside Carson, Liam had always been one of their strongest fighters.

Though he had never suffered wounds as severe as Carson’s, he had faced many life- threatening situations.

Liam broke into a wide smile after hearing her words. “It’s nothing. Back during our interstellar campaigns, I completed far more dangerous missions than this.”

He wore a clearly proud expression.

Layla shook her head with an amused smile. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “Try not to take on so many risky jobs from now on. Once Shane finishes his research, no battle will ever be that deadly again.”

Warmth washed over Liam. He tightened his grip around her hand.

They walked on in comfortable silence, unaware of the stares coming from George and Oliver trailing behind them.

George’s jealousy was impossible to hide. “Why does Layla only hold his hand? I wish she would hold mine, too.”

Oliver rolled his eyes. “Can’t you see Liam made the first move? If you want something, you have to go after it yourself. I honestly wonder how you ever made it big in the entertainment industry.”

George glared back at him, offended. “Just because I work in show business doesn’t mean I’m out there flirting for attention.”

Oliver mumbled under his breath, “Pretty close, if you ask me.”

Furious, George rolled up his sleeves and got ready to lunge at Oliver.
