Chapter 76 Why She Said No

But once she got entangled with the main characters, she’d be dragged back into the pull of the plot.

She wasn’t confident that things would go the way she wanted once that happened.

She wanted to live. To live well. To enjoy this new life she’d been given.

She didn’t think she’d made the wrong choice by rejecting Shane.

But watching him stand there, eyes red and glistening, still trying to comfort her-it made her chest ache.

Maybe he could see how upset she was. He handed her a cup of water.

The cup-she’d shaped the clay herself.

Later, Shane had helped refine it. Layla loved it because it felt like something she’d made with her own hands.

“Really, it’s fine. And it’s not like I have anyone else I like right now. If you change your mind someday and decide I’m actually not so bad, you can come find me. I’d be more than willing.”

“That doesn’t sound like something you’d say,” Layla muttered, taking the cup.

Shane made a questioning sound. His voice was deliberately light.

Layla nodded firmly. “It really doesn’t.”

He nodded too. “Maybe not. But when you see someone you care about hurting, you can’t just say nothing.”

He’d never been much of a talker. But he learned fast.

He’d picked up plenty of nonsense from the live chat these past few days.

Besides, he’d noticed how Layla kept her distance from him, how she seemed almost careful not to get too

close.

If she hadn’t asked, he probably wouldn’t have said anything today.

But she had asked. And he couldn’t lie.

Maybe this was for the best. At least now she knew how he felt.

“You seem like you’re feeling a little better. Can I know why you said no?”

Layla took a deep breath. “It’s not because you’re not good enough.”

Shane nodded. She didn’t think he was the problem.

“Then…”

“I don’t want to get involved with any of Stella’s mates.” She saw him about to speak and shook her head. “I know you’re not. But you used to be.”

Chapter 76 Why She Said No

“I never was, actually.” Shane paused. “Not really.”

But then he remembered that before the show started, Layla had tried to win him over.

As the Grant family’s true heiress, she was trying to curry favor with the future mate of the family’s fake

heiress.

At the time, he hadn’t seemed interested in accepting.

Back then, he’d thought she was a handful. So when she came to him with her gifts and her smiles, he hadn’t bothered to correct her assumptions. He’d just kept his distance.

He hadn’t explained himself then. Now, trying to explain felt a little too late.
