Chapter 77 The War Spreads
What do you mean she stayed silent? She threw a huge scene and cried her heart out when those males came for Layla. If she hadn’t pulled that stunt, Layla never would have turned down Prof. Slater.]/
[How is that Stella’s fault? Be honest with yourselves-if you were in her shoes, wouldn’t you be conflicted too?]
[You can be conflicted, sure, but you still have a conscience, don’t you? Even if you really want to do something you know is wrong, most people won’t because there’s a line. But Stella crossed it
The war spread from the live chat all the way to Ins.
Layla had no idea.
Shane hadn’t expected that he was being rejected because of Stella.
He felt both joy and despair.
It was not that he was unworthy of Layla’s affection.
Rather, as long as Stella remained, his past with her would forever be a thorn in Layla’s side.
But there was also a small, hidden hope. “So if you won’t accept me… does that mean you won’t accept anyone else either?”
“Anyone else?” Layla looked confused.
“George. Liam. Those guys.”
“No.”
[It’s over. Every ship I’ve ever loved has sunk.]
[Heh. Good thing I ship Prof. Slater with General Hartwell.]
[I ship Prof. Slater with George.]
[You guys are into some dark stuff. I ship Prof. Slater with Wolf Boss.]
[Okay, I get shipping Prof. Slater with General Hartwell, and I get shipping him with George. But Wolf Boss? How does that even work? They’ve barely even met.]
[That’s what keeping a low profile is, you heathen. Never meeting in life, yet resting together in death- that’s the real romance.]
[Well, your ship just sank too. Prof. Slater doesn’t like Stella, so he won’t be buried with her after he dies. No sharing a grave with Wolf Boss for you.]
The live chat was full of wailing and frustration. Layla spotted the undisguised glee on Shane’s face and suddenly realized everything.
“All that sulking the past few days… were you jealous?”

Shane nodded. “I know I don’t really have a right to be. But yeah, seeing you talk to them makes me… uncomfortable.”
Layla thought about it.
If Shane got uncomfortable when she talked to Liam and George, maybe she should keep her distance from them too.
Just in case Stella also got uncomfortable and came looking for trouble.
It wasn’t that Layla was afraid of Stella causing problems. She just didn’t have time to waste on her. She’d rather stockpile more supplies and live her life in peace.
The next time George came by, he immediately noticed that Layla was even colder to him than before.

He gave her a suspicious look. But Layla had never been friendly with him-there was too much bad blood between them. Maybe she was just remembering old grudges.
His bringing water wasn’t a big deal anyway.
Yates took the buckets and handed him the jerky in exchange. Layla didn’t even come down.
Shane wasn’t home. Layla was building another treehouse.
The third one.
The second one is for Yates. So who is the third one for? Is Layla bringing someone else home?
How come everyone else got to stay, but not me?
George was getting annoyed. He stood under the tree and yelled up at her, “Hey! Who’s this one for?”
Layla glanced down at him. “Not you, that’s for sure!”
George felt a surge of frustration. He came running to Layla’s place every day. What was the point? So she could take shots at him whenever she felt like it?
“Like I’d even want it!”
[Oh, please. You can try to fool us, but don’t fool yourself.]
[Just don’t start believing it.]
‘Layla ignored him.
Yates saw how upset George was and didn’t dare say a word. He dragged his little stool over to the stove, frying jerky with one hand and setting up the distillation apparatus with the other.
George stood in the yard for a while, got bored, and left.
Nobody noticed when he arrived. But Yates visibly relaxed once he was gone.
Shane didn’t come back until the evening. His left leg was busted. He limped with every step, and there was
