Chapter 91 The Answer
Layla turned to look at Stella. “Really happy? How happy, exactly?”
She could see that Stella was just here to get under her skin.

Nobody else knew Shane’s true nature, but Stella did. Stella understood him. Wasn’t that just a fancy way of saying the bond between them was something special?
Others might miss it, but Layla had read the book. She knew exactly what Stella was playing at.
Stella hadn’t expected Layla to ask that. She was caught off guard, frozen for a moment before lifting her. head to stare at Layla.
Layla asked, “What’s wrong? Weren’t you just saying how happy you are? Not so happy now?”
Stella was silent for a moment, then shook her head. “You’ve misunderstood. That’s not what I meant. Prof. Slater, can’t you explain? You know me.”
“I don’t!” Before Stella could finish, Shane had already taken a step back. He looked at Layla with utter seriousness. “I don’t know what kind of person she is. And I don’t want to. The only person I want to know is you.”
Layla said, “Mm. I know.”
It was enough to erase the panic that Stella’s suggestive words had stirred in Shane’s chest.
“You know…” he said flatly, then the words caught up with him. Maybe she meant more than just that.
“Know what?” He grabbed Layla by the shoulders, then immediately realized that was too forward. He let go and stepped back half a pace, but his eyes never left her face. “Say it clearly.”
“Do you really not understand?” Layla reached up and tapped him on the forehead. “Then you really are pretty slow.”
It was an intimacy she’d never shown him before. Shane’s heart skipped a beat. He caught her hand. “What you’re doing right now… does that mean what I think it means?”
“What do you think it means?”
He lowered his gaze slightly. “That you’re willing to give me a chance. Am I right?”
Layla tilted her head back and saw her own reflection in his eyes. A version of herself with warmth at the corners of her eyes and lips. It looked a little unfamiliar, even to her. But she didn’t hate it.
“Well,” she said, “the show rules say if I don’t want to keep dating you, I have to kick you out. And you’re hopeless at taking care of yourself. If you went out there alone, you’d probably die, wouldn’t you?
“I mean, you’re a genius mech designer and all. If I let you die out here, that would be on my conscience. Hey! Put me down! Put me down! Shane!”
Before she could finish. Shane had scooped her up and was spinning her around the yard.
Chapter 91 The Answer
Layla yelped, startled by the sudden motion. She threw her arms around his neck out of instinct. She called his name, but instead of putting her down, he spun her even faster.
“Shane!” She smacked him on the head. “Put me down!”
He winced, then saw that her face had gone red. Only then did he stop. He held her close. “You said yes! You said you’d be with me!”
Layla had never seen him like this. It was a novelty. She didn’t push him away.
The truth was, she was happy too.
Saying yes to him wasn’t just about starting a relationship.
It was about something bigger. It was about fighting back against this world.
The world controlled by the plot was slipping away.
In the original story, there was no version where Shane liked the original owner. Certainly not one where he chose her with such conviction. There was only the original owner’s one-sided obsession.
But now? Everything was different.
Shane had chosen her right in front of Stella.
Maybe the plot could be changed. Maybe she didn’t have to hide from Stella and Stella’s mates.
Maybe all she had to do was be herself. Do what she wanted to do.
As for Stella’s protagonist halo…
Wait. I’m not the original owner.
The moment she arrived in this world, things should have started to change.
She was the one who’d been clinging too tightly to the plot.
Even without Shane, in the original story, the original owner had never met Yates.
Liam and George had never had a single good moment with her on the show.
The few times they did cross paths, all they’d shown her was disgust and contempt.
Especially every time George saw her, it was like she was some kind of disease.
Things had already been changing for a long time.
She was the one who’d been trapped in the original plot.
She was the one who kept believing the story was unchangeable—that if she drew close to the male characters, disaster would follow.
