Chapter 94 Ulterior Motives
But Layla understood. The Beast World was pretty open-minded about these things.
If they clicked, they mated. Everything took a back seat to the birth rate.
For a couple who’d officially declared their relationship, getting physical was completely normal.
And Layla, coming from the apocalypse, wasn’t exactly the type to get all flustered about it either.
One could tell just from the fact that she’d let Shane sleep in her cabin in the first place.
“Ulterior motive, huh?” Shane was as honest as ever. “I don’t want to be apart from you. I have to go out during the day. If I couldn’t see you at night too, I’d be miserable.”
And how could Layla bear to make Shane miserable?
Of course, she said yes.
Shane said, “Don’t worry. If you’re not comfortable with anything, I won’t push.”
Besides, the show had Vanguard streaming everything live.
Not that anything inappropriate would actually make it to air-the feed would cut out automatically. But a cut feed was basically an announcement to the whole world.
Shane didn’t really care either way.
But this was private. Out of respect for Layla, if she wasn’t willing, he wouldn’t insist.
“I never said you couldn’t.”
Shane’s eyes lit up. He wrapped his arms around her waist. “Couldn’t what?”
“Nothing.” Layla didn’t pull away. “Stella and Caleb came by today.”
Shane had heard Layla talk about Caleb before. He didn’t think much of the guy.
“Together?”
“Yeah.” Layla nodded, leaning slightly into him to take some weight off her feet. “They think we should share our salt with everyone.”
“You agreed?”
“How did you know?” Layla’s eyes curved into crescents.
“Planning something?”
“No.” Layla protested. “That’s not who I am. They came to me first. They handed me the opportunity. I’d be
a fool not to take it.”
“Weren’t you just complaining the other day that you couldn’t figure out how to get everyone else to do your

work for you?”
“Okay!” Layla reached up and covered his mouth. “We get it; you’re smart. Now shut up before someone s watching and you ruin my plan.”
Shane didn’t push her hand away. Instead, he pressed a light kiss to her palm.
Layla jerked her hand back like she’d been burned. The tips of her ears turned pink.
[Ah! Layla’s blushing! Prof. Slater just kissed her!]
[No way. Prof. Slater isn’t like that. He’s got that cold, untouchable vibe. No way he’d do something like that on camera.]
[Why not? Don’t let that cold, untouchable act fool you. Don’t forget, he’s a snake beastkin. You know what they say about snakes… ahem.]
[Oh my god. I heard snake beastkins have two of those. Is that true? Any snake beastkins in the chat want to confirm?]
[My boyfriend’s a snake beastkin. I fell for that pretty face too. Turns out he’s wild. I can barely keep up.]
[Some have too much, some have none.]
[You sound bitter. What’s your boyfriend?]
[Cat beastkin. Seriously, stay away from cat beastkins. I’ve dated three. None of them lasts long.]
[But they go multiple rounds. We cats may be quick, but we’re ready to go again right away. Ten, fifteen times a day is nothing.]
[What good is more rounds if each one’s over in seconds?]
Yates came back to find Shane holding Layla, his chin resting on her shoulder.
Layla started to get up. Shane pulled her back onto his lap. “Don’t move. Let me hold you a little longer.”
“Yates’ back,” Layla reminded him.
Shane grunted in discontent. “So what if he’s back?”
He was showing off, and he knew it.
“Alright, stop being clingy. Aren’t we eating?”
“I’ll cook.” Yates jumped up and bolted for the stove. “You two go on.”
But Layla pushed Shane away. “Enough. Shane needs some meat. I’ll do it.”
It wasn’t Yates’ fault. He was a herbivore. Cooking meat wasn’t in his wheelhouse.
