"Ethan?" The old man said in surprise as he took in Ethan’s look.
To say he had changed would be an understatement. As casual as they looked, he could immediately tell the kid was wearing expensive clothes.
He remembered seeing Ethan just a few months back and this definitely wasn’t that same Ethan.
"What the hell happened to you kid?" The man said, completely shocked at the Ethan sitting before him.
"I could ask you the same, old man," Ethan said, "where’s all your staff and what happened to the restaurant?"
The old man sighed heavily before pulling out his notepad and saying, "why don’t you order something first and we’ll talk while you eat?"
Ethan looked at him before saying, "then I’ll have something light for lunch."
"The usual then?" The old man asked.
"Yeah,"he nodded surprised that the old man still remembered his usual order.
"Alright then," the old man said, "give me a few minutes."
With that, he walked towards the back where the kitchen was and a few minutes later, Ethan could hear sizzling.
Ding!
The bell above the door let out a ring and the old man shouted from the kitchen, "please take a seat, I’ll be with you in a minute!"
Ethan felt the person slowly approach until they were standing directly behind him and their reflection visible on the lid of the salt shaker, but only barely.
"Ethan?" The person called out and Ethan slowly turned towards them with a small smile on his face.
"It’s been a while," he said, "Mrs Harper."
"It really is you," Mrs Harper said as she took a seat opposite him, "you look different."
"I guess I won’t be buying that coffee," he said with a chuckle.
"I guess," she said with a smile of her own, a rare sight of itself since she was always known to be the angry Mrs Harper.
"So," she continued, "that business took off?"
"Well," He leaned back a bit, "you could say that, though right now, I work for a company known as OmniTech."
Mrs Harper froze in shock, as she did a double take and asked, "OmniTech Corp?"
"Yes," Ethan nodded.
"The same OmniTech that released Sentinel and very recently Vitaband?" She asked again, still in disbelief.
"The same one," he said with a chuckle as he took a sip of the water the old man had given him before walking into the kitchen.
After a short while of finally accepting that the same Ethan Carter that had previously worked for her as a part-time teacher now worked for the fastest growing company company in the world, Mrs Harper said,
"I guess your nerdy stuff really did pay off."
It was their most non-explosive option.... at least back when they were fully in business anyway, right now?
They barely had any customers anyway, so there was no such thing as expensive on their menu anymore, they just wanted at least a single customer per day.
But ever since ’that’ happened, they hadn’t been getting any, so much so that they had to let go of their employees, even though they were willing to work without pay.
The old man watched Ethan eat the salad with a smile of satisfaction on his face, he loved watching his customers enjoying food he prepared by himself.
But he had been denied of that Joy for the past month, all because of a single demand.
Ethan calmly put the fork down after he was done eating, and wiped his lips before turning to the old man.
"Thank you for the food," he said, a satisfied smile on his face.
"Don’t mention it," the old man waved his hand, "I’m just glad I haven’t lost my touch."
Yeah, he definitely hadn’t, there was only one other place that Ethan could get food as good as this and that was at María’s.
"Now then old man," Ethan leaned back a bit, "do you mind telling me what happened happened to this place? Because as far as I know, this place is the best around these parts.
The old man sighed, his face seemed to have aged years than he actually was. Whatever had happened, was definitely something that gave him a headache.
Ethan frowned, judging by the old man’s reaction, it definitely wasn’t something that could be easily handled.
"Our problems started two month ago," the old man started, taking a small pause, "and that problem is known as Leonard Smith."
