Countless subtle glances darted back and forth among the three of them.
Everyone was waiting for Sienna to lose her composure, to show anger, to look humiliated, or to throw a public fit.
Yet Sienna was unimaginably calm.
Tilting her head slightly, a faint smile rippled at the corners of her lips.
It was that exceedingly faint smile that made Jarred's heart suddenly sink.
His chest immediately tightened, filling with an irritating wave of frustration.
He was far too familiar with this expression.
He had seen Sienna look fierce with anger, teary-eyed with grievance, and softly smiling with tenderness.
But this particular smile was the one that left him the most terrified and powerless.
Sienna slowly dragged her gaze away from the two of them, her eyes as desolate as a frozen wasteland.
She looked at the near-hysterical Daisy, her voice devoid of any emotion.
"You're absolutely right. Your mother's accident should be investigated thoroughly. We shouldn't allow the slightest bit of injustice."
Daisy froze.
She clearly hadn't expected Sienna to say that.
"I fully support the police opening a comprehensive criminal investigation."
Sienna looked at her, every word ringing with open honesty. "Thoroughly analyze the ink and paper of this note, verify the handwriting, and trace its exact origins.
Scour all of Mrs. Bridges' call logs, travel history, and home surveillance footage prior to her death. Let the evidence speak for itself and leave no stone unturned."
Having said that, she turned sideways, her gaze landing squarely on the somber Jarred next to her.
"Captain Sterling. As a public official, upholding the law impartially is your duty. You certainly wouldn't let personal bias bend the law, right?"
Jarred's Adam's apple bobbed.
He looked into her eyes—the same eyes that had gazed at him countless times in the dead of night—but right now, they seemed separated from him by a thick veil.
The way she looked at him was no different from how she would look at a stranger.
Staring at the indifference on her face, his voice was raspy, carrying a trace of restraint even he didn't realize. "I will."
"Good."
