Jarred's breathing grew noticeably heavier.
He took a half-step forward, his soles crunching softly against the broken porcelain.
His dark, unfathomable eyes locked onto the woman in front of him.
"Not everyone possesses your ruthlessness and capabilities," he said, suppressing his surging emotions, his voice raspy and restrained.
"You're proficient in both Eastern and Western medicine, you know hypnosis, and you understand psychological intervention. But she barely scraped by when she took her medical licensing exam back then. She doesn't have your ability to handle stress, let alone your confidence to turn a desperate situation around!"
Sienna had always been calm and composed, always decisive and ruthless when handling issues, having long cultivated an unshakeable mindset.
Yet at this moment, her breathing became rapid and erratic, her chest heaving violently.
However, the man in front of her was drowning in his own perceptions and biases.
He was completely oblivious to her breaking point, or perhaps, he simply had no heart left to care.
Sienna suddenly felt cold—the kind of cold that seeped out from the marrow of her spine.
She heard herself reply with that same icy, almost mocking composure, "And so? Is it my fault that I'm capable? Is she right just because she's weak?"
"When you locked her away in that psychiatric hospital, did you ever consider that she wouldn't be able to hold on?"
Jarred pressed in closer, his words heavy as a hammer.
"When you blocked every doctor from treating her and cut off all her avenues of survival... Did you ever think that she might actually waste away and die in there?"
Years of unruffled composure had long made it a habit for Sienna to never display vulnerability.
She closed her eyes, her eyelashes trembling slightly. The instant she opened them to fire back, her tone was utterly devoid of warmth. "Why should I have considered that?"
Those few indifferent words completely froze the last remaining trace of warmth in the air.
Jarred looked at her cold, resolute expression, the tenderness in his eyes vanishing in an instant, leaving behind an equally icy apathy.
He suddenly let out a cynical laugh. "Of course you wouldn't. You turned a blind eye to her suffering. You even instructed your people to block anyone who tried to beg for mercy or bail her out—you just wanted her to rot away."
