She walked to the door and reached out to pull open the tightly shut apartment door.
The wind from outside rushed in, scattering the last lingering trace of warmth in the room.
She looked up, her eyes holding nothing but a frozen indifference. Facing Jarred, she spat out one final word.
"Get out."
The aggressive aura radiating from Jarred froze instantly, his previously overbearing momentum catching in his throat.
He lowered his eyes, taking a deep look at the woman before him.
He wanted to explain, but every argument had already been cast in stone. No matter what he said, it would only sound pale and ridiculous.
After a few seconds of a stalemate, Jarred's fingers curled slightly, but ultimately, he couldn't bring himself to say anything.
He withdrew his gaze from her face and, carrying an unshakable aura of gloom, stepped out of her apartment.
With a loud "Bang," the door slammed shut behind him.
The massive reverberation made Jarred unconsciously glance back.
He didn't know when it started, but every conversation between them had become this hideous, seemingly reaching the point of a complete breakdown.
Looking at the tightly closed door in front of him, an unprecedented sense of panic and unease instantly crawled over his entire body.
Sienna deployed heavily increased manpower to track down Celeste's whereabouts.
But it was as if Celeste truly was dead; there was not a single trace to follow.
There was no progress on Thea Stanton's end either.
"I checked all the private sanitariums and medical facilities across the country, and there are no admission records for Celeste. I also checked the properties under Helena's and the old madam's names, but found nothing unusual."
"They wouldn't hide someone right under our noses," Sienna said.
"Let's change direction. Look into the people on Helena's side of the family. Even though she joined the Sterling family, Sebastian Vaughan dotes on his sister more than anyone. With Sebastian's power in the Capital, hiding a person would be child's play for him."
"I'm already looking into it." Thea paused for a moment. "Sienna, there's something I need to tell you. About the District Attorney's Office... My contact there said the chain of evidence is incomplete, and since the Sterlings are involved, someone higher up gave them a heads-up to shelve it for now."
Sienna took a deep breath.
