Meeting Captain Rhodes's gaze, Jarred parted his lips, his deep, magnetic voice carrying a perfectly measured dose of apology.
"Captain Rhodes, please forgive them. My grandmother and mother have cherished Celeste for years and have long treated her as their own flesh and blood.
Their attachment is simply too deep, and this is hard for them to accept in the moment. I hope you understand."
With that, he pushed off the hood of the car and walked over.
Stopping in front of the two women, he lowered his head slightly, his tone even. "Grandma. Mom. Step aside."
Eleanor's eyes went wide. "What did you just say?"
"Don't obstruct official business," Jarred repeated.
His voice remained calm, but beneath that calm lay an undeniable authority.
"The police are handling a case. Once the procedure is done, they'll restore it to exactly how it was. Blocking them serves no purpose."
Helena panicked. "Jarred, are you out of your mind? You're letting the cops dig up her grave? She's..."
She didn't dare finish the sentence.
She knew her son was fully aware those weren't Celeste's ashes, yet he was telling them to move?
"Mom."
Jarred turned to look at her, his gaze placid. "If the ashes inside really belong to her, digging them up for verification is good for everyone. And if they don't..."
He paused, the faintest ghost of a smile flickering across his lips like a ripple on the water. "If they don't, then they definitely need to be dug up."
Helena froze.
Staring into her son's eyes, she suddenly read something she hadn't anticipated at all.
A sense of total control, an absolute, unwavering composure.
She wanted to argue, but Jarred had already turned away.
Without waiting for a response, the warmth in his eyes vanished. He raised a hand and shot a sharp glance at the bodyguards behind him.
