Chapter 221
“The number you have dialed is unavailable-
The cold, automated female voice came through almost immediately. I hung up fast, then pulled up Neil’s number and tried that
Same thing.
By my calculations, their flight should have landed in Mexico last night. How could they both be out of service range?
Had something happened overseas?
The thought made a knot of anxiety tighten in my stomach.
Let’s be real, the way Gavin had aggressively expanded his influence over the years had earned him plenty of enemies. This new project had a lot of people green with envy.
Something going wrong wasn’t just possible, it was likely.
I took a deep breath, about to try a few more times, when my phone suddenly rang.
My eyes lit up for a second, only to dim again when I saw the caller ID. I answered it anyway.
“Grandma Eleanor.”
“Oh, little Elara! I hope it’s a good time to talk?”
Eleanor was a kind soul, always cheerful. Right now, hearing her voice actually gave me a strange sense of grounding.
“It’s fine. What’s up?”
“Well,” she began, sounding like she was choosing her words carefully, “My grandson, for some reason, is still very keen to meet you. He didn’t give me the details. Would you have time to come by my house in the next couple of days?”
Probably worried I might have reservations, she quickly added, “Don’t you worry, he’s definitely not the type to play games. I think he just genuinely wants to get to know you as a friend.”
That wasn’t my main concern. I’ve always believed you could judge a person by how they were raised. Grandma Eleanor was a wonderful person; there was no way she’d raised a grandson with poor character.
The problem was, my current situation wasn’t exactly under my own control “Grandma, I’m not sure if I can make it. How about contact you once things settle down for me?”
“Of course, of course,” she agreed readily, but then her tone shifted to one of concern. “You haven’t run into any trouble, have you? If you’re in any kind of bind, you must tell me.”
A wave of warmth spread through my chest. “No, it’s nothing. Please don’t worry.”
1 could tell Grandma Eleanor came from a wealthy family, but in this city, only Gavin could really counter Zane’s influence. I didn’t want to drag anyone else into my mess.
Finally satisfied. Eleanor was ready to hang up. “Alright then, I won’t keep you Once you’re less busy, come over anytime, just to visit.
“Okay.” I’d just softly agreed when a sudden knock came at the door.

Chapter 221
I walked over, about to speak, when I heard the housemaid’s voice. “Young- It’s me, Ma’am. Not the Young Master.”
I paused, then opened the door. “You know Zane and I divorced a long time ago. You can just call me by my name.” She’d been right there when I first reached an agreement with Victoria.
“…Alright.” She hesitated for a second, then handed me a cup of warm milk and a slice of strawberry cake. “The Young Master said you probably didn’t eat much at dinner, and he knew you wouldn’t want to see him, so he asked me to bring this up.”
“Don’t take your anger out on your own health,” she couldn’t help adding.
“Thank you.” I didn’t say anything else, just took the items, closed the door, and immediately tried calling Gavin a few more times.
Without exception, no service.
I didn’t let myself worry for too long, though.
Given Gavin’s capabilities, I was sure he could handle whatever came his way. If he couldn’t, he would’ve been swallowed up by the power struggles within the Windsor family years ago.
I’d slept too much during the day, so I was wide awake now. My eyes kept drifting to my silent phone. It wasn’t until the sky began to lighten with the first hints of dawn that I finally felt some drowsiness creeping in.
But the moment I heard movement downstairs, I got up and went down.
Zane was in the living room watching financial news. He looked surprised to see me. “You’re up early.”
It was a rare thing, us having a conversation in the morning. Back in the day, we could go a whole week without crossing paths in this house.
I had no interest in answering his question. “Can I go out today?” I planned to go to Windsor Manor and figure out what was going on.
“You can.” He walked over, gently tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear. His touch was tender. “I’m having lunch with Charles and the others. You’re coming too.”
“I have other plans.” My voice was ice–cold.
