He didn’t seem annoyed, acting as if he hadn’t even heard my refusal. He just gestured toward the dining room. “Let’s have some breakfast first.”

**I felt like I was punching a lump of soft cotton–all my force just dissipated into nothing.

Fine. If he wanted to play it like this, I didn’t care about keeping up appearances anymore. “I said I have other plans,” I snapped, my voice tight with frustrated anger. “Zane, if you insist on this, I won’t hesitate to call Gavin right now-”

Truth was, I had no idea if anyone would even pick up. I was just banking on the fact that Zane would still be somewhat wary of him.

Zane’s lips pressed into a thin line, cutting me off. “Gavin is already back.”

“Aren’t you looking for his help investigating your parents‘ deaths? He’ll be at the restaurant where I’m meeting Charles and the others at noon. You can ask him in person.”

Gavin’s back?

I looked up at Zane, suspicion written all over my face. “Are you lying to me again?”

He clearly said he’d be back in four days. By my count, he still had three to go.

Seeing the doubt in my eyes, Zane sighed, a note of helplessness in his voice. “Whether I’m lying or not, you’ll find out when you go, won’t you? The Lin family booked the private room themselves. Word is already out that it’s to discuss Viola and Gavin’s marriage.”

My nail dug into my fingertip. My voice was very quiet. “I see.”

So, Gavin was actually back early.

But he was too busy discussing his marriage to find time to return a single phone call to me.

Or perhaps, the return date he’d given me was intentionally pushed back. Just to keep his mistress in her place, to make sure I didn’t get in the way of his real life plans?

I knew I should be rational about this, but for some reason, anything involving Gavin made my thoughts spiral into a mess.

Around noon, Zane had someone deliver several sets of designer outfits from a luxury boutique. I changed into one without much thought and

left for the restaurant with him.

The place was ridiculously opulent, with even the front steps embedded with jade. You couldn’t get past the door without a reservation.

Zane was clearly a regular. The moment we entered, a server led us straight to a private room.

Just before entering, Zane took my hand without asking. “Play along,” he murmured.

I was about to pull away when he pushed the door open. Something suddenly exploded with a loud pop inside the room. I flinched hard, and Zane used the moment to pull me into his embrace.

Colorful confetti drifted down like snow.

Charles, seeing how startled I was, glared at the other guys who were still snapping pictures with their phones. “I told you not to use those party poppers. You can’t scare a girl like that.”

“We’re just happy for the couple!” one of them said, rubbing the back of his neck before adding to me, “Sorry about that. Won’t do it again.”

“It’s fine.” My voice was flat. I instinctively pushed out of Zane’s arms and went to sit in an empty seat.

The person next to me immediately took the hint and vacated the spot for Zane. “Here, Zane, sit.”

Zane sat down with his usual easy grace. Charles, sitting across from us, looked at me and asked, “Has Zane not apologized to you yet?”

Of all his friends, Charles was the only one I’d bother being polite to. “Apologize for what?”

“Well…” Charles glanced at Zane, who didn’t seem to mind him explaining. “For mistaking someone else for you. Now that all those misunderstandings are cleared up, you two should be able to move on properly, right?”

I pressed my lips together. Under Zane’s gentle, expectant gaze, I dropped the bombshell. “We’re already divorced.”
