Chapter 224
“Mhm.”
“How could she get divorced if I don’t agree?”
With just a few casual words, he’d brushed the whole divorce matter aside.
Stepping out of the room, I felt my whole body relax a little.
Staying these past couple of days in the villa I’d once shared with Zane had felt stifling. I wanted to leave but couldn’t.
I let out a soft sigh and headed straight for the restrooms.
Just as I was about to round a corner, I saw a group of people emerging from the elevator bank in the distance.
My eyes instantly found the towering figure nearly two meters tall–Gavin, in a sapphire blue cashmere coat and a dark gray suit, his blond hair and blue eyes making him stand out nobly in the crowd. Plenty of women passing by stole second glances.
He really was back.
Zane hadn’t lied to me this time.
My steps faltered slightly. My heart felt like a sponge soaked in water, heavy and tight.
The group consisted of seven or eight people. The Dowager Windsor led the way, chatting happily with Vera ‘s parents, while Vera, as usual during work, walked closely by Gavin’s side.
Equal social standing. A perfect match.
Just as I quietly lowered my gaze, the man’s dark, penetrating eyes seemed to glance almost imperceptibly in my direction.
Our eyes might have met briefly. Or maybe they hadn’t.
Their group soon entered a private room. The heavy door closed snugly, just like the past eight years between Gavin and me.
How could I have let myself believe, just because of the last month or two, because of that stupid contract, that anything would be different?
How could it be?
He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. The fact that he’d deigned to look my way again, to pull me out of a mess, was something I should be groveling in gratitude for.
How could I dare hope for more?
I quietly lowered my lashes, walking toward the restroom while opening my phone to delete the alarm I’d set for three days from now.
–
– Gavin’s back! Remember to pick him up.
He wouldn’t need me to pick him up.
I didn’t even know he was back.
Pushing down the inexplicable tightness in my chest, I entered the restroom. When I came out and was washing my hands at the sink, I saw Vera’s reflection in the mirror.

Chapter 224
Vera was wearing a white Chanel suit today with an expensive pearl necklace, looking both proper and feminine, her well bred elegance
obvious.
She seemed surprised to see me too. But, aware of my history with Gavin now, she seemed momentarily at a loss for words. She hesitated before offering politely. “My family and the Windsors are having a meal here. Would you… like to join us?”
“No.” I was startled, then shook my head. “I’m here with friends. They’re waiting for me.”
Facing Vera, I felt awkward too.
Vera wasn’t unscrupulous like Amelia. Even when she came to the clinic to ask me to leave Gavin, she’d been, at the very least, straightforward.
Hearing my refusal, Vera actually seemed relieved. “Alright, then you should get back to them.”
“Mhm.” I acknowledged and turned to leave.
Behind me, for some reason, Vera suddenly spoke again. “Our families are dining together today to discuss my and Gavin’s marriage.”
My back stiffened slightly, but I didn’t turn around. “I heard.”
That contract… the power had always been in Gavin’s hands. He could call it off anytime.
Sensing Vera’s unease, I added, “Don’t worry, I won’t… cling or make a scene.”
Even if I desperately needed Gavin’s help. I couldn’t bring myself to do that.
Watching me leave, Vera parted her lips, hesitated, but ultimately said nothing more.
As I walked out, I looked up and saw the man leaning sideways against the wall, his gaze fixed directly on me.
I clenched my fist slightly and planned to walk past him when his low voice, laced with displeasure, sounded. “Now that you’re reconciling with him, you’re planning to block me again?”
I turned my head to look at him, my expression neutral. “I’m reconciling. You’re discussing marriage. Isn’t that perfect?”
A clean break.
“Indeed.” Gavin nodded in agreement. “A match made in heaven.”
His response left me speechless. Then I saw a faint, mocking curve touch his lips as he said, “Or are you planning to unilaterally break the contract? Which of my cards were you planning to wire the penalty fee to?”
Three billion.
I couldn’t rob that much cash from a bank.
Besides, he was the one discussing marriage.
Why should I pay?
Zane appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and walked toward me. Probably thinking we siblings were having a spat, he smiled. “What penalty fee? I’ll cover it for her.”
“Regardless of how you measure closeness,” Gavin’s aloofness was unmistakable, “it wouldn’t fall to you to pay for her.”
