Zane’s expression froze.

I wasn’t sure what he was getting at. My lashes lowered. “What do you want?”

Gavin looked at me and stated blatantly, right in front of Zane, “Is fulfilling our agreement so difficult?”

He couldn’t help but look at me. “What agreement?”

Hearing this, I glanced at Gavin and seized the chance to improvise. “The agreement that I have to live across from him and walk his dog. So, since he doesn’t agree now, I can’t move back.”

I said it with complete sincerity.

I even managed to inject a hint of forced helplessness into my tone.

Gavin’s situation with Viola made it clear I needed to keep my distance. Asking for his help wasn’t really an option now.

Currently, I needed Zane’s help investigating my parents‘ deaths, but I didn’t want to go back to living with him in the villa.

Still, I didn’t feel too guilty.

I’d saved both Zane and Victoria’s lives back then. Using Zane’s resources now to look into something wasn’t too much to ask.

Gavin clearly hadn’t expected my mind to work so quickly. He raised an eyebrow, a faint, ambiguous smile playing on his lips as he looked at Zane.

“You heard her?”

Zane knew Gavin’s nature. When he decided to be self–willed, he didn’t care about anything.

Plus, Zane wanted to reconcile with me. Interacting with Gavin was unavoidable in the future, so he didn’t want to cause a rift.

Not a hint of displeasure showed on Zane’s face. He even smiled warmly. “Alright. I’ll take her back to her apartment after lunch.”

“No need to trouble yourself.” Gavin’s voice was flat as he delivered this line, then took my wrist and led me away.

His strides were long and fast, betraying the irritation that had been simmering in him these past couple of days.

I quickened my pace to keep up, but his grip on my not–fully–healed wrist hurt. I couldn’t help but inhale sharply, though I didn’t struggle.

Gavin didn’t stop walking, but his gaze, seemingly casual, swept over me.

Noticing the ring of red, not–yet–scabbed marks on my slender white wrist, his expression didn’t change, but his hand shifted its grip higher.

He led me all the way to the parking garage, pulled the car door open, and lifted his chin slightly, gesturing for me to get in.

I bent down and slid inside, moving over to the far seat. Just as I settled, he got in too, and with a forceful pull, slammed the door shut with a resounding thud.

1 thought he was about to lose his temper over me breaking our agreement by seeing Zane. But then I saw his sapphire blue eyes fixed intently on the injuries on my wrist, his brow furrowed. “From the other night?”

I hadn’t expected him to notice such a minor injury. I was momentarily taken aback. “Mhm.”

Seeing my calm demeanor, Gavin felt an inexplicable restlessness. “Does it still hurt?”

I shook my head without thinking. “No.”

It was just some surface abrasion. It hadn’t even hurt when it was being treated.

Now it was almost scabbed over. It wouldn’t hurt unless someone gripped it with brute force, like he just did.

“You were terrified of pain when you were little,” he said slowly. “You’d cry nonstop if you fell. You were scared of shots too.”

“I’m not scared anymore. This kind of pain doesn’t count for much.”

I said it indifferently. If a person is always afraid of pain, how can they ever grow up?

In the process of growing up, you slowly learn that pains like falling down or getting a shot are nothing–because there are far more things that can cause you pain.

If there’s no one around to protect you, you just have to endure it. You get used to it after a while.

I didn’t see anything wrong with that. Who in this world gets to be protected forever, never having to bear any hurt?

This kiss was different from any before.

It was very light. Very shallow.

I hadn’t even had time to close my eyes before Gavin gently pulled back.

Watching my lightly trembling lashes, he asked, “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
