knew he was asking about me going back to the villa with Zane and blaming me for not telling him.
But what about him?
He’s the one who’s been busy discussing marriage prospects with someone else.
What right does he have to demand an explanation from me? If Zane hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t even have known he was back.
Gavin looked down at ine.
Seeing that I seemed to have no intention of speaking, a flicker of irritation crossed his features.
just as the air was growing thinner and we seemed poised to stay locked in this stalemate, the tightly sealed partition suddenly began to lower, just a little
Neil, mustering his courage, decided to play mediator.
“Miss, about today… this was something the Dowager and Viola’s family arranged privately. It doesn’t have much to do with your brother. He went to the
restaurant to…”
Before he could finish, Gavin shot him a glare that could kill.
Neil cleared his throat and inmediately fell silent, knowing when to quit. He raised the partition again, leaving us with ample privacy.
Well, as private as it could be.
Neil could still hear everything, but at least the view was blocked.
Gavin’s expression didn’t change as he looked calmly at me. “Are you that concerned about it?”
I nodded. “It’s very important to me.”
Even with the contract signed, I felt there was a big difference between being a regular mistress and being the other woman who breaks up a relationship.
The very nature of being a mistress meant there was no concept of ‘first come, first served.‘
You started off on the low moral ground.
‘If it’s that important, why can’t you remember?”
Gavin’s lips pressed into a stern line, his tone noticeably displeased. “Count how many times I’ve denied it.”
It took me a second to process his meaning. Once I did, the guilt I felt lightened considerably.
He had denied it many times.
Almost every time I started to believe it might be true, he’d quickly refuted it.
pressed my lips together. “Many times.”
‘But?” Gavin’s tone was cool and stern, like when he used to lecture me as a child. “The moment someone else says something, you believe it again.”
‘You’ll believe anyone, just not me?”
That last sentence from Gavin made my heart feel inexplicably stuffy and tight.
How much had I trusted him once?
So much that even when he abandoned me, I couldn’t believe it. I’d chased after him, asking why, crying, “Brother, don’t leave Jace.”

Chapter 226
I didn’t know how none of that trust remained now.
A lump in my throat shot straight to the top of my head. I turned my face away, staring wide–eyed at the back of the driver’s seat, forcing back the wetness in my
eyes.
After a long moment, I muttered something completely off–topic. “Well, you didn’t tell me you were back either.”
Gavin didn’t catch my mumble. “So, your explanation?”
I didn’t stay at Zane’s on purpose.” This time, I didn’t stay silent. “Zane wouldn’t let me leave.”
– I called you, and you still haven’t called back..
“Anything else? Say it all.”
I lowered my head slightly, taking a silent breath, forcibly ignoring the potential for his mockery, and plunged ahead quickly. “I called you, and you didn’t call
back either.”
Maybe it was because I’d never really been in an ambiguous relationship before, but I wasn’t good at handling this sort of thing.
I just knew, very clearly, that this particular thing had genuinely bothered me.
I just wasn’t sure if, given the nature of my relationship with Gavin, my feeling upset about this was even justified.
I was afraid Gavin would dismiss it with a scornful, “Who told you a lover’s calls have to be returned? You’re not my girlfriend.”
But I still felt that even between ordinary friends, if you tell someone to pick you up, you should inform them if the time changes.
A very soft chuckle came from above me. Then, Gavin’s voice, cool and detached, like someone holding all the cards, spoke.
“Perhaps you should start by explaining why Zane answered your phone?”
‘He answered my call?”
For a second, I just stared, baffled. Then I grabbed my phone, frantically scrolling through the call log. Even though I found nothing, I immediately understood what must have happened.
Well. No explanation needed now. Gavin had already put the pieces together.
knew him not returning my call was payback–tit for tat. Totally in line with his never–let–a–grievance–slide nature.
didn’t dare press him further. I had more important things to worry about.
ane really wasn’t acting like himself lately. If Gavin would help look into my parents‘ case, I could minimize my contact with Zane.
he thought made me brave. “Gavin, there’s something I…” I started tentatively.
