Chapter 246
That girl next to Gavin is the daughter of his business partner.}
[His partner was planning to introduce her to him today. He just got shut down before he could even get a word out.
A question rose, unhidden, in my mind. I had to ask. (You said before that Gavin has someone he likes.. do I know her?]
Something felt off. If Viola knew Gavin was in love with someone else, why would she be feeding me so much information? After all, my relationship with Gavin was… complicated. While we were friends now, she was also his secretary.
Then, combined with his attitude at the restaurant entrance…
Unless the girl he liked was…
[You do.]
[Find a chance to sneak a look at his wallet.]
Even while accompanying Gavin to this business lunch, Vera had time to reply with two instant messages.
I looked down, sent a quick reply, and had just put my phone down when Octavius piped up, curious. “Big sister, was that uncle at the door your boyfriend?”
“…” I curved my lips into a faint smile. “No.”
I didn’t want to make a fool of myself again, getting my hopes up over nothing.
I couldn’t handle being thrown down that hard. Not again.
Beside me, Elias, who had looked a bit downcast, brightened visibly upon hearing my answer. I saw his nephew shoot him a smug, raised–chin look, like he was expecting a reward.
Elias just chuckled, ignoring him, and turned to me. “We ordered already. See if you want to add anything else.”
I glanced over the list and shook my head with a smile. “No, this is great. It’s all stuff I really like.”
“See?” Octavius pretended to pout. “Big sister, I’m telling you, Uncle is so biased! He only remembers what you like to eat, not me.”
Hearing this, my eyebrows lifted slightly, and I met Elias’s gaze.
He just smiled, a warm, effortless thing. “That’s because you’re always overseas, and your tastes keep changing. Who can keep up?”
“Well, I’m not leaving this time. You’ll have to remember what I like from now on.”
“Deal,” Elias agreed readily.
I was a little surprised. “You’re not going abroad again?”
“Nope.” Elias glanced at Octavius but didn’t hide it from me. “My sister and her husband are getting a divorce. He’ll be staying here in the country, living with my sister from now on.”
I understood. I’d heard from Elias a couple of years ago that his sister’s marriage was having problems. They’d probably held off for the kid’s sake until now.
Chapter 246
After lunch, we dropped Octavius off at home first, then Elias and I headed to the research institute together.
The moment we stepped into the lab, Abbott greeted us, his face lit up with excitement. “It worked! Group Leader Windsor, Ellas, the experimental data this time is perfect!”
He handed the data sheets to me.
Caius looked equally thrilled. “Group Leader Windsor, you guys are seriously amazing!”
I took the papers and scanned them, a wave of relief washing over me.
This was it. We were a huge step closer to the result I’d envisioned.
The thought that soon, I could really develop this drug, really achieve my dream, sent a thrill through me like never before.
When I threw myself back into the R&D work, I had more drive than ever.
I needed to be faster.
Just a little faster.
Elias noticed my urgency. “Don’t rush it, Elara. One step at a time. We’ll get there.”
“Okay!” I nodded firmly.
For the next several days, I buried myself in the lab, only leaving for clinic hours and to crash at home for a few hours of sleep.
I’d once worried this drug was just a pipe dream, something with little chance of ever becoming real.
But now, that experimental data was telling me otherwise.
It wasn’t.
I was close to success.
I was about to fulfill the wish my parents had always held–to save people, to save many people.
When I was little, I used to envy other kids whose parents were around every day. Mine were always so, so busy. I’d even thrown tantrums about it, too young to understand.
I remember my mom holding me, patting my back gently. “Jesse, do you know how many people your dad and I can save every time we succeed in a mission?”
“How many?”
