Chapter 277
Chapter 277
To be honest, I’d given up on Zane actually finding anything or doing anything for me. My parents had been gone for so long. I didn’t need to rush to find the ruth right this second. Once Mrs. Sinclair’s treatment started showing progress, I could ask Benjamin for help. The Sinclairs‘ main influence was in LA. It should be quick.
t had been a while since he’d heard my voice. “I’ve… mostly finished looking into what happened back then.”
frowned. “You found something?”
Yes.” He hesitated. “Actually… I found out a little while ago. I just… hadn’t figured out how to tell you.”
lis words sent a jolt through me. My eyes instinctively flicked up to Gavin’s face.
he only reason Zane would hesitate to tell me what he’d found… it had to be…
Maybe it was a suspicion I’d always harbored, one my subconscious had been desperately trying to ignore. Zane’s call was forcing me to face it.
His voice came through the phone again. “Can you come down?”
paused, not answering immediately. I really didn’t want to be alone with him.
‘ane knew the last incident had left me wary. “If it’s easier… I can come upstairs? Chloe will be there. You probably… wouldn’t be as afraid of me.”
Okay.” That time, I agreed more quickly. Being on my own turf felt safer.
Hearing my agreement, he relaxed slightly. “What time is good?”
Five minutes.” At this hour, Chloe was usually either working overtime or gaming. It wouldn’t be too disruptive.
hung up. Beside me, Gavin’s brow was lightly furrowed. “Zane?”
Yeah.”
What does he want?”
Said he… has something to tell me.” I pressed my lips together as we entered the elevator.
‘robably because of what Zane had said on the phone, that hesitant tone, my thoughts were in turmoil. I didn’t even have the mental energy to press Gavin urther. I desperately hoped I was just overthinking it.
When the elevator reached our floor and I moved toward 2201, my wrist was suddenly caught.
lavin, sensing the shift in me immediately, held me captive with his dark gaze. “You’re not going to… see him and then go back to ignoring me, are you?” His oice held a self–mocking note, low and a little rough.
My heart clenched. I couldn’t even give him a definite answer.
I… I need to get home.” With that, I pulled my wrist free and stepped inside first.
hloe was in the middle of a game, glancing over from the couch. “Why didn’t you close the door?”
Zane is coming over soon.” I hadn’t planned on hiding it from her anyway.
hloe tossed her phone aside. “What’s he doing here?”
He was helping me look into…” I walked over and sat down, rubbing my chest which felt strangely tight and sore. “…my parents‘ death.”
Chloe’s expression grew more serious. She was about to speak when a knock sounded at the door. Zane stood outside.

Betrayed? I Ungraded to His Rillionaire Rrother
Chapter 277
Even though he lived just upstairs, it felt like we hadn’t seen each other in ages.
He stood there in a white button down and black dress pants, as refined as ever, but you could see the lack of his former, spirited confidence. A faint air of (dejection) hung around him.
Zane’s eyes dropped to the pair of disposable slippers placed by the entryway. Knowing they were for him, he bent to change into them.
He walked into the living room and handed me a folder. Careful, as if afraid any wrong move would send me running further away, he maintained his distance.
“The official report was that a semi truck crossed the center line and hit the taxi your parents were in. Your parents and the driver died on impact. The truck driver was drunk. He got seven years. At the time, there was no further evidence, so the case was ruled an accident. You knew all that, right?
Yes.” I nodded. I’d been young, but I remembered it vividly.
As he spoke, I took the manila envelope he offered and pulled out the contents. A photograph.
‘But,” Zane continued, “the taxi your parents took… its brake pads were faulty.” He timed his words carefully, “What you’re holding is the archived photo of hose brake pads.”
My fingers gripping the photo turned white. “So… it really wasn’t an accident. Was it?”
Chloe gave my shoulder a gentle pat. “But with a situation like this, without more concrete evidence, it usually just gets ruled an accident.”
‘Chloe’s right.” Zane gestured for me to keep looking through the documents. “Because the taxi driver also died in the crash, and with the lack of surveillance
back then, there was no way to prove the brakes had been tampered with beforehand.”
However,” he went on, “that taxi driver, while he appeared to be alone in the world, actually had a child. An ex–girlfriend of his was pregnant when she narried someone else. The child was born with a congenital heart defect. But the surgery was too expensive, so they kept putting it off.”
But six months after your parents died, that child had the surgery. And that family… they bought a new car. A new house.”
Hearing this felt like a physical blow to my chest. My heart twisted, and it was hard to breathe. My parents‘ lives…. had been bought. For a high price.
Chloe frowned. “They were that careful? They waited six months to use the money?”
There’s more.” Zane was matter–of–fact. “The money came to them as a lottery win. It was clean. Even if the police dug deeper, they couldn’t find any concrete
vidence.” Whoever was behind this was experienced.
took a deep breath, trying to ease the bitterness in my chest. “So… do you know who was behind it?”
The Windsors.”
