Billionaire, I Am Not Your Wife! novel Chapter 135

Cameron’s POV

I looked at the glass wall.

Lucian was still working. He hadn’t looked up from his computer. From this angle, his expression was still, professional, composed and focused on what he was typing down.

I’d been watching that face across a desk for eighteen months.

“I’ll think about it,” I said.

“Think faster,” Durian said. “He’s a thorough person who notices things and is not oblivious to new changes, even if there are minor and subtle. If he hasn’t already noticed what you’re doing, he will by Monday.”

He ended the call. I put the phone down and looked at the glass wall.

The third room-exit of Friday happened at three-forty-five.

I could reconstruct it later with painful clarity, could pinpoint what happened and how it had gone disastrously wrong.

Lucian had come in with the end-of-week summary-the document he prepared every Friday, the compiled version of what had happened this week in a summary and also a report of things that were pending for the following one.

He put it on the desk.

I was on my feet, which to be fair, I was always on feet when the day was almost ending and I needed to move around which helped in relieving tension from the day’s work. But this time around the distance between us was quite notable, but I chose not to focus on that yet, maybe he wouldn’t notice it.

“The Hendricks response came back,” he said. “They’ve accepted the revised terms and have concluded that there is nothing wrong with the contract and we can move forward.”

“Good.”

“The Singapore weather buffer has been built into the travel office confirmation.” A pause. “They thanked me for noting it. Apparently last year’s delay was significant and had destroyed a lot of plans which cost them significant resources and manpower trying to make up for their losses.”

“I know. I read the note and it was extensive, they snag your praises and pointed out how capable you are as an assistant, and one even offered to buy you from me, as if you are a commodity, I turned him down so you are stuck with me, just so you know.” I looked at the summary without looking at him, which was a technique I’d been employing all week to avoid the specific problem of looking at him directly, which required more management than looking at documents. “This looks comprehensive.”

“It’s the usual format. Maybe you have forgotten after my short vacation away from active duty”

Miserable Seufs

Yes, maybe that is the reason.” I turned a page. The Meridian follow-up-is the call scheduled?”

Thursday the fourteenth. Nine AM their time, which is-”

“Noon here,” I said nodding my head nothing the time difference as continued “Yes. Good.”

A pause in which neither of us said anything, me focused on flipping through the pages, although my eyes were actually not seeing anything and could feel I’m staring at me, his brows furrowed, like he was noticing something but was wondering if this was the right time to bring it up or if he would keep quiet. I prayed that he didn’t want to bring up that talk, it would crush me to hear a no from him.

“Is there anything else you need from me today?” he asked.

“No,” I said. “That’s-no, I think we’re done.”

“All right.” He moved toward the door which was behind me from my position and walking past me would make him brush me, or I might do something uncomfortable and hold him, making him more uncomfortable and weirded out.

And I did it.

I moved toward the window, away from the door, creating additional distance from the exit he was using, removing myself from the path.

“Have a good weekend,” I said, to the window.

“You too,” he said, from the doorway.

And I heard his footsteps moving away, and I stood at the window with the end-of-week summary in my hands and the late afternoon light of Seattle coming through the glass, and I thought about what Durian had said.

*He’s going to think you’ve changed your mind.*

I wanted to turn when I felt his footstep stop and from the reflection in the window in front of me, I could see what was happening clearly.

Lucian was in the doorway. He hadn’t left yet-was standing in the open door of my office, the door I’d been leaving open all week, one hand on the frame. He was looking back at me.

He didn’t know I was seeing him, he was staring at me.

“Cameron?” He called out as I turned to look at him, a blank expression on my face.

“Did you remember something important you forgot to tell me?” I said immediately as I watched his expression fall, as he looked at me and then at the window and shook his head.

“No, I was… You…. Do you need assistance? I could stay..”

“That wont be necessary Lucian, your presence is not needed, I have it under control.”
