“Not yet,” I said. “I’m not “I stopped, “Cameron has been managing so much. Because of me, because of all of it. I’m not ready to hand him one more thing I’m responsible for giving him.”
“He wouldn’t see it as-” Lucian started.
“I know he wouldn’t,” I said. “That’s part of why I’m not ready. Because he’d take it on completely and I don’t want to be the reason for that right now.”
I looked at the swings, at Drew doing the precise mechanics of swinging.
“I’m going to figure out how to get to Nick. I’m working on what that looks like. But I want it to be mine first. My plan, my reaching. Something I’ve done rather than something that’s been organized on my behalf.” I paused. “Does that make sense?”
“Yes,” Dante said. He’d been quiet through all of it, which was his own version but also the right kind of
version as well.
He didn’t say much but he understood more than he let on.
“It makes sense,” Lucian said as well as I turned to look at him as he continued speaking.
“I won’t say anything to him.”
“Thank you,” I said.
We were quiet for a moment.
Lake had gotten off the swings and was running toward us with the momentum of someone who had remembered that food existed. Drew was still swinging, slightly, precisely, his face turned up toward the sky with the expression of someone examining something.
“Drew’s going to want to know about the ducks,” Dante said. “Specifically whether mallards migrate.”
“Do they?” I asked.
“Some do,” he said. “Some stay. He’s going to have opinions about which ones should do which.”
“They stay if the winter is mild enough,” Lucian said. “The ones by the park usually stay.”
Dante looked at him. “How do you know that?”
“Lake asked last November,” Lucian said. “I looked it up.”
Of course he had.
Lake arrived at the blanket and began organizing himself a plate with the efficiency of someone who had clear preferences and the confidence to act on them.
“Lake, how about you sit down and I put together your meal.” Lucian said as Lake shook his head.
“No, I got it handled. The last time you gave me all veggies. I don’t like veggies.” He said as a matter of fact as Dante snorted loudly covering his face suppressing his laughter. I was also amused as Lucian

looked exasperated.
“Veggies taste good though ” Lucian spoke, trying to defend himself.

“Yeah maybe for you, but definitely not for me” lake said as he sat down near his dad and stared shoving chips in his mouth with the unashamed confidence.
Drew came more slowly, deciding to come and join us to eat and then stopped and carne over and sat beside me carefully the way a person who had decided this was simply where he sat now.
“Dad, I have a question about the ducks, during migration “he said getting to his father as Dante gave me a look that clearly screamed, ‘i told you so’
“The ducks stay,” I told him.
