Chapter 47: The Summary Of Her Life
Sedona’s POV
“The irony was that as time went on, after I got married to him, the things that made him attractive at first became problems later. The decisiveness became controlling because he was always in charge and he never liked me contradicting him or doing things that he didn’t approve of. The confidence became dismissiveness as my opinions were always not listened to. The clarity about what he wanted meant there was no room for what I wanted.”
“When did you realize it was wrong?” Enzo asked quietly.
“I’m not sure I did at that moment. Not consciously. Not until much later.” I looked at them both, these people who’d known me before Chicago, who remembered a version of me that had gotten buried somewhere in the past three years.
“I got pregnant about six months after we met, which was something that greatly influenced my decision. The pregnancy was unplanned, and I expected the worse for Logan to assume that I was trying to tie him down with a pregnancy he didn’t asked for because he was rich but Logan seemed happy about it. He proposed on the spot, not bothering to even make an effort about it and I was so happy we were getting married at all that I said yes, saying that he was proving his love, we got married quickly, and then Nick came early-eight weeks early-and everything became about keeping him alive.”
Rachel’s hand went to her mouth. “Eight weeks early. Sedona, that’s-”
“It was terrifying,” I said simply, knowing it. It was something that I had gotten used to and loved with the fear so I knew how to cope with it and not let it affect me visibly.
“He was so small. So fragile. The doctors weren’t sure he’d make it through the first few nights and he was kept in constant care and supervision. But he fought hard. He was a fighter from the very beginning.”
My voice caught slightly as I swallowed hard. “And I devoted everything to him. Every moment, every thought, every decision that I made was something I did after checking how it would affect Nick’s life. Logan was building his company, working constantly, and I was fine with that because it meant I could focus entirely on Nick without feeling guilty about neglecting my husband.”
“That’s a lot to carry alone,” Rachel said.
