But she wasn't going to investigate or dwell on the reasons.
Once she decided to let go, she meant it.
Unless she reconciled with herself or found a compelling reason to change her mind, she wouldn't waver.
"Are you leaving or not?" A silver needle glinted between Isabel's slender white fingers in the sunlight.
Edmund suddenly ran out, a black pill in his hand.
Adrian had a gut feeling this was the most potent version yet.
He stood up, pulled Oliver to his side, and looked down at Isabel. "You won't be Isabel Ashford forever. When you reclaim your true identity, you'll come looking for me."
Isabel did indeed need to find him, because they were still married.
"Don't let me keep you," she said, seeing no point in admitting it now when they couldn't talk.
Adrian's group left.
The small yard returned to its former tranquility.
Old Mr. Reed came out to start lunch. "You all should head back after you eat," he told them. "This whole mess is giving me a headache."
"Is it really the mess, or something else?" Isabel asked. "Let me take a look at you later."
"I don't need you to look at me," old Mr. Reed refused. "I know my own body."
Isabel wanted to say more, but Julian gave her a subtle tug.
She fell silent.
After lunch, they said goodbye to old Mr. Reed and returned to the Fiorhaven Principality.
The villa in Aurelia City had been trashed and wasn't repaired yet.
The laboratory was gone too.
Isabel would have to complete X-1 at the Ashford estate.
She didn't expect to see Amanda there.
"Oh, and someone else helped too. I don't know who exactly, but they seemed to know Mr. Reed. They have a high position, even higher than Adrian's older sister."
"I also heard that those two don't get along."
As she spoke, she started gossiping, and Evelyn was immediately hooked. "Man or woman?"
"A woman," Amanda said. "Apparently, they used to like the same person, and they've been rivals ever since."
"No way," Evelyn said, leaning in conspiratorially. "Quick, give me the details."
Isabel sighed in amusement, but seeing Amanda able to gossip meant things were okay.
"Isabel," Julian said, coming in from outside. "I have to go take care of something. Call me if you need anything."
Isabel immediately stood up and walked him to the door. "Is it your business, or trouble someone else made for you?"
Julian chuckled. "Either way, it's something that needs to be handled."
He reached out and pinched her cheek. "You just stay here, focus on your experiments, and enjoy life. We'll deal with Aurelia City after things settle down."
