Isabel simply said, "You have to be careful."

She added, "Maybe you should take Edmund with you."

"I'll be fine," Julian said, waving a hand over his shoulder as he walked away. "I've never lied to you, Isabel."

He talked a lot of nonsense, but it was true—he had never lied to her.

Isabel couldn't get involved in his affairs; he wouldn't let her help even if she wanted to.

And he hadn't even noticed when she'd done it. It was only after they had walked away from the cabin that Shadow realized the needle was gone from his wrist.

His code name was Shadow precisely because he had the observational skills of a hawk.

Adrian sat on the sofa, rubbing his weary eyes.

Alen, hearing the news, came in and poured him a drink.

"Came back empty-handed, huh?"

Alen had a different opinion. "You never know. What if Julian gave her poison? We don't know what happened between them."

Adrian was certain. "Julian didn't give her poison. The poison was her own. But her escape from the Blackwake Sea has Julian's fingerprints all over it."

"I know what you mean," Alen said, pouring himself another drink. "You're thinking that if Julian had placed the poison in Selena's tooth recently, our machines would have detected it. But if it was there from the beginning, it would be much harder to find. After all, when you brought Selena back, you ran every possible test. You didn't miss a single strand of hair. It's impossible you wouldn't have found it."

That was exactly it.

The old tech could be bypassed because once the system was upgraded, it only scanned for new items, not pre-existing ones.

It was his oversight.

He always thought Selena was under his control, and that she was terrified of death.

For someone like her, placing a poison pill in her tooth was completely out of character.
