“That partial formula of mine,” Isabel continued, “was for a drug that was already half-developed. My stubbornness was the only reason the research wasn’t completed. The formula was on an old computer of mine, which I later gave to my son, Oliver Blackwell, to play with. He was close with Selena back then. We won’t investigate how it was leaked.”
“In any case, the failure of Y-2 is proof enough that Selena only had a superficial understanding of it.”
“Moreover, she attempted to use the Blackwell family matriarch as an illicit test subject. I discovered this and remedied the situation with an upgraded version of Y-2. Otherwise, the elder Mrs. Blackwell...”
“But don’t worry. The six people who passed away because of Y-2 have all been secretly treated by me. They are all fine.”
As she spoke, the individuals in question appeared.
Miles led them in, and Andrew brought their families as well.
These families had been all over the news, so their faces were familiar. They embraced, crying with joy, proving their identities.
This served as further evidence that Isabel was telling the truth.
Some things didn’t even need to be said; the reporters could piece the story together.
It probably wasn't just that she had seen through the facade of her marriage. Something must have been going on between Adrian and Selena, which prompted her to leave and reclaim her career.
During that time, Adrian had been so devoted to Selena that he hadn't let Isabel rest, even in death.
She must have been completely disheartened.
Meanwhile, in a presidential suite at the hotel, the press conference was being watched on a screen.
Oliver couldn’t understand most of it, but one part he did.
His little face scrunched up as he said to Adrian, “Dad, every time we went abroad, I used to play games on Mom’s computer. One time, I clicked on something and a bunch of formulas I didn’t understand popped up. Selena was really interested and asked to see them, so I showed her. I didn’t know it was important to Mom.”
Adrian patted his head. “You didn’t know any better. It’s not your fault.”
He suddenly recalled Isabel mentioning the computer before.
So that’s what it was about.
“I came here today not only to clear up the Y-2 incident and announce X-1, but also to bring justice to these people.”
Isabel’s voice came through again.
“Mr. Blackwell, our superiors knew you’d try to intervene, but not this time. This is a cross-state investigation, and we’re being supervised by Ms. Caldwell, who was assigned to our state by the federal government.”
Kate Caldwell?
His older sister’s arch-nemesis, her sworn enemy.
The two had been at each other’s throats for years, all because they had once loved the same man.
Suddenly, it all made sense to Adrian. He finally understood why he couldn’t find anyone.
Why he couldn’t get in touch with Julian.
He asked one last question. “What is Julian’s relationship with Kate Caldwell?”
The officer was impassive. “I’m afraid I’m not at liberty to disclose that.”
He added, “Mr. Blackwell, please have your men stand down. It’s better to keep things amicable. Your sister’s political career is on the line, and you play a crucial role in that.”
