Adrian was dressed formally today in a custom-tailored gray suit with a subtly patterned tie.
He looked as if he were attending an important event.
At her words, his brow furrowed. He loosened his tie as he approached her. “You’re always so pleasant to outsiders, but you give me and our child nothing but cold looks.”
Isabel scoffed. “Isn’t that what I learned from you, Mr. Blackwell?”
Adrian’s expression didn’t change. “You couldn’t learn my good qualities? Only my flaws?”
Isabel wanted to retort, ‘What good qualities?’ but when she thought of his accomplishments, the words caught in her throat.
He had treated her terribly, even using her friends as leverage, which was despicable.
But aside from his lack of feelings for her and his ruthless methods, she couldn't really name any other faults.
Ultimately, she steered the conversation back to the divorce. “What will it take for you to agree to a divorce?”
“I won’t agree to a divorce,” Adrian said, sitting down on the sofa, perfectly at ease. “You can go pursue your career. The household can be managed by others. However, as the mother of our child, even if you can’t be hands-on with everything, you should show more concern.”
“If you don’t agree, then we go back to how things were. You can be a stay-at-home wife again.”
Isabel ignored his terms. “Why won’t you agree to the divorce?”
Her lips curled into a sneer. “Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen in love with me. That you only acted that way before because you had to use Selena, not because you didn’t care about me. After all, no one can force you, Mr. Blackwell, into marriage. You have a hundred ways to make me back down, but you still married me. So, even though you don’t say it, you have feelings for me?”
“How ridiculous.”
Adrian had been about to say something along those lines, but her sarcastic tone and those last two words stopped him.
Instead, he said, “You have no choice. Not in getting married, and not in getting divorced.”
It was true.
While it seemed like she had initiated the marriage, he had been the one in control.
And now, the divorce had been dragged out for a year and a half simply because he refused to budge.
But Isabel had no intention of giving up.
“Adrian, I am getting this divorce. I don’t agree to your terms. I have to be in control of this.”
“Then you can try,” Adrian said, completely unconcerned. He sat there watching her, letting her do as she pleased, knowing she couldn’t escape his grasp.
