It had been rushed. As expected, there were no surprises.
Mr. Ashford's hands trembled as he held the test results. He had been searching for his daughter for so long, but now that the moment was here, he was at a loss.
Mrs. Ashford was more direct with her emotions, pulling Isabel into a tight hug. "I felt a connection to you the moment I saw you. I'm so happy you're really my daughter."
Isabel hugged her back, gently patting her on the back to keep her from getting too overwrought.
Mr. Ashford said to Isabel, "We're so sorry. You've suffered so much."
Isabel shook her head. "No, I haven't. I've actually had a good life."
"How could it have been good? That man..." Mr. Ashford recalled the things Adrian had done, even threatening his own father-in-law and openly challenging the Durantin family.
Before, he couldn't be bothered to deal with him, but not anymore. Now that Isabel was his daughter, he wouldn't let her suffer the slightest injustice.
"You're coming back with us immediately. We'll change your last name, and I'm going to announce to the world that you are my biological daughter. Your identity as Isabel Hayes will be nullified, which means your marriage to Adrian will be void as well."
Isabel said, "Please, don't get ahead of yourself. I can handle the divorce. I know you're worried about me and feel guilty for losing me all those years, but it wasn't entirely your fault, and my life really hasn't been bad."
"I was the one who wanted to get married. I have to bear the consequences of the path I chose."
"You don't have to," Mr. Ashford said. "If you had been my daughter, by my side, I never would have let you be bullied like this."
Isabel's heart warmed. "But what if I had been lovesick and insisted on marrying him anyway? What would you have done then?"
"Well..." Mr. Ashford really didn't have an answer. If his daughter was set on marrying someone, he probably would have agreed.
"But with me backing you up, you wouldn't have had to spend all those years alone. We could have helped you with the children. At the very least, when you were on that operating table, fighting for your life, we would have been there to sign the papers and save you."
"Also, there's no rush to announce Isabel's identity. A certain someone should be kept in the dark for now. If he still shows no remorse..."
Julian found it amusing just thinking about Adrian's reaction when he found out Isabel's biological parents were Mr. and Mrs. Ashford.
"Let him dig his own grave."
Isabel guessed Julian's intention and smiled. "That's a good idea. Physical pain isn't enough; he needs to suffer mentally, too."
Julian snapped his fingers. "As long as you don't feel sorry for him."
Isabel pursed her lips. "Why would I feel sorry for him?"
"Old Mr. Foster," she said, turning to him. "Please come have dinner with us. I didn't even get a chance to see you after the holiday."
