"Let's talk inside."
With that, Ryan led the two of them into a private conference room.
Another officer was already waiting inside—the same policewoman who had monitored Zoe Bellamy at the hospital.
At Ryan's nod, she recounted exactly what had happened at the hospital that morning.
During her interrogation yesterday, Zoe had suddenly started screaming about a headache and demanding medication. She claimed to suffer from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, insisting she needed immediate hospitalization.
Given that the police had discovered psychiatric drugs and related medical records at her apartment yesterday afternoon, the precinct conducted a comprehensive evaluation. They decided to transfer her to a designated psychiatric hospital for treatment that night.
She was escorted by a male and a female officer, but despite their presence, disaster struck anyway.
Around 10:13 AM today, while being taken to the imaging wing for a brain scan, someone suddenly slashed her carotid artery with a razor blade. Despite emergency resuscitation efforts, she was declared brain-dead at 11:00 AM due to severe blood loss.
The assailant who wielded the blade had no prior connection to Zoe. Preliminary investigations revealed the attacker was also a diagnosed schizophrenic.
However, whether the attacker was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the murder was still under investigation. The official psychiatric evaluation report would typically take anywhere from two weeks to a month to process.
After the officer finished her debriefing, all four people in the room—herself included—knew this couldn't just be a coincidence.
But the police needed hard evidence, and the fact that the killer was a psychiatric patient made cracking the case exponentially harder.
"Now that Zoe is dead, we can no longer pursue criminal charges against her for what she did to you and your father," Ryan told Willow, a hint of regret in his voice. "The case will be automatically dismissed in a few days."
That left only Willow, Ryan, and Waller in the room.
Waller hadn't offered a single opinion so far, merely listening quietly from the sidelines.
He couldn't wrap his head around the motive. He simply couldn't fathom why Beasley would resort to silencing someone permanently.
Willow had told him that Beasley was after the core technology for her micro-drone, but would he really go this far just to get his hands on it?
Blackmail and bribery made sense, but a contracted hit? That was an astronomical gamble that could easily tank both him and the corporate empire backing him. The risks far outweighed the reward of acquiring a piece of tech that wasn't even entirely irreplaceable. Was it really worth it?
Besides, Beasley was a highly successful businessman. Would he actually make such a high-risk, low-reward move?
