"No," Willow answered definitively. "And he doesn't need my forgiveness anyway."
"Why do you say that?" Waller asked.
"Why would he want it?" Parting her lips slightly, she turned to look out the passenger window. "He couldn't care less about something like that."
"Don't you think he cares a lot about you now, though?" he pressed, glancing her way again.
Her long, curling lashes caught the slanting afternoon sunlight pouring through the window. The light cast delicate shadows across her soft features, making her profile look like a masterpiece framed in the glass.
"Cares about me?" she scoffed, a cynical smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as if she'd just heard a hilarious joke. "He cares about STAR, not the actual me."
"He didn't love me but was forced into marrying me. I don't blame him for treating me poorly during our marriage—I brought that misery upon myself. The only person I can blame for that one-sided devotion is me.
"But I can never forgive him for standing by and watching my dad suffer. That was the moment I realized his coldness wasn't just a surface-level act or a defense mechanism—it's baked into his very bones. He is a ruthless, profit-driven corporate machine through and through. If a person or situation doesn't benefit his bottom line, they mean absolutely nothing to him."
"Tell me, why would a man like that need my forgiveness? What kind of market value does an apology hold to him?"
"As for him caring about me..." The mockery on her face deepened. "His entire attitude only shifted after he found out I was STAR. So even if he had nothing to do with the kidnapping, I could never be friends with someone like that."
Waller gave a gentle nod, his eyes brightening. "Understood."
The anxiety and tension that had been twisting his gut instantly vanished.
Even the sunlight streaming through the windows suddenly seemed brighter.
Having talked so much about herself, she suddenly found herself curious about Waller's past.
"By the way, what made you fall in love with fighter jets in the first place?" she asked.
Waller felt an incredible surge of joy. They had attended the exact same air show years ago. They might have even crossed paths in the crowd without ever realizing it.
"Talk about a crazy coincidence," she laughed.
Waller's handsome brow relaxed completely. She had just voiced exactly what he was thinking.
"How's the bomber training going? Are you adjusting well?" she asked next.
Before he could even open his mouth, she smacked her own forehead. "Wait, I totally forgot you already have over three years of bomber experience. What a stupid question."
Waller was completely speechless.
"So, that means your simulator training hours should be cut down significantly, right?" she pivoted smoothly.
