Chapter 13
KAT
It was the most awkward dinner I’d ever sat through. Hunter sat on the lounge floor, legs sprawled out and picking at his takeout. He wasn’t flirty anymore. Just quiet, withdrawn, facing the window like I wasn’t there.
I’d half expected the night to end the same way as before, with me emotionally wrecked and physically
ruined.
Pushing my food away, I cleared my throat.
“I’m sorry again about the living arrangements. I’ve ordered a few things; they should be delivered tomorrow,” I said.
That had taken a huge chunk of my bonus. I could only hope that my new salary covered the gap once everything settled.
“No need to apologise,” Hunter said. “Like you said, it’s better than being homeless.”
I cleared my throat again and pulled my notebook closer.
“I don’t know if you have any other job leads yet, but until you do, I meant what I said. You have a place here.”
He gave a slight nod, still looking at me.
I’d thought it through. If he could land an interview at the Bureau, he had very strong credentials. It wouldn’t take him too long to find something else.
“I’ve thought about it,” I continued. “If you’re going to stay, I’ll need you to help out. Cleaning, cooking, stuff like that.”
Hunter’s brow raised.
“You want me to be your cleaner now?”
“It’s an exchange,” I rushed out. “I cover your essentials. You help keep the place together.”
And honestly, I hated cleaning. Until I left my pack, I’d never even folded a towel. Independence had hit harder than I’d anticipated.
There was a flicker of something in his eyes.
“I thought the deal was you give me a place to stay and I let you use me every night for a hundred bucks.”
Heat rose up my cheeks. I dropped my gaze and pretended to read through my notes.
“We’re still doing that,” I said quietly. “You’ll need money to keep you going until you get a job.”
Damn. This was going to work out far more expensive than I’d expected.
“So I’m your maid by day and sex toy at night.”
I choked on my spit. Coughing violently, I reached for my glass of water. Hunter thumped my back gently until the coughing stopped.
“You don’t have to put it like that,” I muttered when I could finally speak. My cheeks were blazing. “I’m hardly ever here. I don’t make that much of a mess anyway.”
I thought about the pile of laundry that was already growing in my room and immediately avoided his gaze.
“No feelings. No interrupting each other’s personal lives,” I said, flipping to the next page in my notebook.
Hunter leaned back, his expression unreadable.
“So I can take other… jobs?”
My fingers clenched around the pen before I could stop it. I knew what he was, and the thought of someone else touching him made something twist in my stomach.
Could I make this a rule? Could I have him all to myself?
Did I want to?
“Um… For our safety, we should avoid other entanglements,” I said, my voice tight as I quickly scribbled the new rule. “But I won’t ask questions about your personal life.”
He studied me in silence for a beat too long. Was that pushing it? I had no right to keep him from anyone else.
“You’re asking for a lot.”
But something in me refused to back down.
“We can walk away now if you’re not okay with it,” I said, handing him the notebook to read through.
He had to make himself available when I needed him.
Stay away from the Bureau.
No revealing our arrangement.
No meeting outside, no dating.
No questions about what I was doing when we were not together.
Once he found a job and another place, our arrangement was over.
I’d even included clauses about respecting his privacy and space. I didn’t want him to think I was some sort of tyrant. Boundaries would be better for us both in the long run. We’d already had unprotected sex twice.
Hunter smirked as he looked up from the notebook.
“You like to be served, Kitty Kat?”
My eyes widened.
“Served? No, I-”
“I can do that,” Hunter cut in.
Really? My list was rather long. I’d expected a little resistance.
“Oh. Okay,” I said, quickly rising. “Um, you can sign the rules and give the notebook back. I have some work to do. We don’t need to… We can just sleep tonight.”
I turned before I could embarrass myself further and practically sprinted to the bedroom.
“Real smooth, Kathrine,” I muttered, pressing my back against the door.
But I’d done it. I’d set boundaries, so whatever this thing was wouldn’t swallow me whole. And I’d kept him. away from work.
I was the one in control, not my traitorous body.
An hour later, the door creaked open. I looked up just in time to see Hunter pull his T-shirt over his head. My mouth went dry. I swallowed and slammed my textbook shut.
“What are you…
His jeans and boxers came off next. My eyes immediately lowered. He was half hard, but still very distracting. I bit my bottom lip, remembering what he had done to me. Heat rose through my body, and my pulse fluttered.
Goddess. Was this even normal?
Figured I’d turn in, too,” he said. “Looks like I’ll be keeping busy.”
He climbed into bed without hesitation. My eyes widened when his thigh brushed against mine. Even in my shorts and tank top, I felt completely naked.
“Goodnight, Kitty,” he murmured, putting one arm under his head and sprawling out.
“G-Good night,” I managed. My voice sounded squeaky.
Quickly dropping my books to the floor because nightstands were a luxury I couldn’t afford yet, I reached for the lamp and switched it off, bathing the room in darkness. Hunter’s thigh remained pressed against mine. I’d just upgraded from a single to a king, but somehow it still felt too damn small.
I curled away from him, trying to breathe, but the heat from his body had already invaded mine. My toes curled. I felt my panties dampen. A wolf would have already smelled my arousal and heard my pulse. For the millionth time, I was grateful Hunter was human.
Eventually, I drifted off. My dreams were full of Hunter, pleasuring me in ways I hadn’t imagined before.
Making me come in a million different ways.
