I glanced at Kitty constantly while she ate. That flash of terror had gone so quickly that if it hadn’t slammed into me so hard in the bond, I’d have thought I imagined it.

Now all I sensed was contentment. Was this a trick?

How did one go from being so terrified of me to this? Eating so calmly with me at the dinner table as though I hadn’t just set fire to our world by taking her from her home like that? Maybe she was suppressing her real

emotions.

But I was still taking it slow. Figuring things out one by one. This curse being the first thing.

I’d been around long enough to know dismissing such things could be fatal. Magic was so woven into the very fabric of our world that the thought of a curse or prophecy wasn’t as farfetched as Kitty thought. Her father- a werewolf who’d clawed his way to the top through the blood of his own peoplehad locked her away in that gilded page for a reason. Add the fact that Kitty was a onceinalifetime white wolf, then things got a little trickier.

Who would tell me the truth? Kostas? I couldn’t even think of his name without wanting to tear him apart.

My uncle’s staff will be back in the house tomorrow,” I said.

It’s your uncle’s house?she asked as she set her cutlery down on her empty plate.

I’m never here.

She nodded as if something made sense. Then she smiled, stealing my breath again. That warmth spread through my chest like an invasive weed, forcing me to look away from the source of that blinding brightness.

I cleared my throat and pushed away my halfeaten meal.

They’ll come early, but I’ll call a meeting when you’re ready. I’ll introduce you,” I said.

Do they know who I am?Anxiety spiked in the air.

Did they know she was the princess I’d kidnapped? They did by now, if my uncle’s spies were worth the benefits he gave them. And that wedding dress I’d ripped off her must have been a dead giveaway. When Jasper had come, he’d demanded to know who she was and only referred to her as a werewolf, but Kostas’s showing up should have cleared that up for him.

You’ll be safe in this house,I assured her.

I wouldn’t let Jasper back in while she was there. And now that we were at this point, her going back to her apartment was out of the question. Even if no one knew we were mated, they knew I was interested in her. That red target was stuck firmly on her back.

I’ll do the dishes. Do you want to go back to the bedroom, or-

Chapter 131

That terror flashed through the bond again, and she stood quickly.

I’ll do the dishes. It’s the least I can do,” she said, piling the plates.

I didn’t try to stop her. What the hell was that? I scanned the property again for any threats, but found nothing. So I left her to load the dishwasher while I went back to my bedroom. I scanned every inch. Used all my senses. The windows were still shut, and there were no unfamiliar threads to follow. That extra upgrade the bond with Kitty gave me didn’t sense anything out of the ordinary.

When I walked back into the kitchen, Kitty’s gaze was stuck somewhere in the distance as she slowly wiped my counters. When she saw me standing beside her, she startled, clutching her chest as if she’d forgotten I was there.

This wasn’t like her. She was more like a cross between the Kitty I’d known first and Katerina, the princess.

I’llI’ll pull my weight while I’m here,” she said, drying her hands.

Those words cut deep. Even now, knowing how she felt about me, she was still talking about leaving.

Something in me shifted as I advanced on her, gauging every minute ripple that flowed down the bond. If that fear had returned, I would have stopped, but it was everything else I felt. The emotions she couldn’t hide. Her wolf calling to mine.

I’d stayed away from her since the morning on the kitchen table, but it was impossible now. I was strung too tightly. Another moment of her scent gripping me that hard, and I would explode.

She didn’t back away when I closed the distance between us, and when those blue eyes locked with mine, I saw everything she wasn’t saying. Kitty and Katerina merged. Blue eyes and blonde hair, or green eyes and red hair, the same defiant spirit stared up at me.

My fingers trailed the side of her face until I grazed my mark. She shivered, her breath hitching as if I’d lit a fire in her. I wanted this forever. Curse or no curse.

When I lowered my head to hers, our lips touched, gentle for the first time. There was no urgency, even though that rush roared through my blood. Her lips parted for me, and I savoured their sweetness, drawing it into me as if it were my

lifeline.

I raised my head and was met with that same hunger that always wrecked me. But something in me wanted to take it slow tonight. To offer her comfort.

Don’t leave me alone tonight, she whispered.

She was scared. That fear shone brightly before she extinguished it. She pulled my head down and took control, leading me in a kiss that was far sweeter than the first. My whole body shivered with the anticipation of what was to come as I lifted her onto the counter.

Her dress rode up her thighs as she wrapped her legs around me and deepened the kiss. She dragged me too close to the edge of the insanity I was trying to avoid. Tonight, while the house was empty, I wanted to prove myself. I wanted to show her that no matter what happened now, I would be there. I would be her rock.

These weren’t my beast’s thoughts. This was all me. Finally ready to fight for us.
