The white stone, black steel, and glass were the same, even in the early morning light, but the unnatural stillness that had pressed into me before wasn’t as silent anymore. I caught things hadn’t the first time-the soft footfalls of animals in the forest, the rustling of the massive trees, the golden haze clinging to the air, smelling like Nathan, like his magic. That same warmth that had enveloped me the whole time in the car.

And the aura.

The ancient forest radiated power, far more than anything I’d felt before. I’d never sensed its full strength when I’d smuggled myself out of the wolf kingdom at eighteen, and had only noticed something ‘other’ when Nathan brought me the first time. Now the stories made sense. There weren’t many wolves brave enough to cross it to reach the human world.

But Nathan was. And he had a house here.

The look on Zachary’s face when he’d bowed to him flashed through my mind again. Since Nathan had already asked me to step back from him, would he still tell me the truth about what really happened when the coven took him?

I looked over at the man stepping out of the car, his face drawn and tired. Like the last time, he’d done all the driving, and I’d fallen asleep in the back seat. And I’d only been able to because of my bond with Hunter. He was safe and on his way. The bond wasn’t stretched too far.

The Bureau SUVs stopped behind us, and the man I knew as the deputy director stepped out. My eyes widened. When I approached the Bureau, hoping to work my dream job while hiding under their noses, I never expected to meet Mr Tanner.

Though I never thought I’d sleep with the director, either, so there was that.

The older man lowered his head when he stopped in front of me. My shoulders tensed. What would people think if they saw someone so high-ranking submit like that? As deputy director, was stronger than most, and with ties to the Lycan kingdom, likely Lycan himself. His aura was masked, so I couldnt tell.

But Lycan didn’t bow to wolves. That much I knew.

“We’re clear, but the team will sweep the perimeter, just in case, Mr Tanner said. “The coven had a sound barrier over the cabin, so we couldn’t hear what was discussed. But judging by that attack, it’s not safe for you to return to the Lycan kingdom.”

“They can’t get us here?” I asked.

“They’re powerful, but they’re still human,” Nathan said, rubbing his face. “There are only a few safe passages for them through the boundary, and we’re far from all of them.”

“We’ll rest here until His M-until Alpha Sterling arrives,” Mr Taner said. “The other teams in the convoy are also on their way.”

“I’m going to sleep,” Nathan said, taking my hand.

My fingers tingled, and my wolf snarled, unwilling to accept eve that innocent contact. He placed the scroll case in my palm and stepped back, a wry smile on his lips.

He turned to walk up the front steps. “Mi casa es su casa.”

I watched him walk in, then turned to the agents who scattered without, moving like a well-oiled machine. I was left standing alone outside.

I looked up at the lightening sky and the moon sinking behind the trees, and sighed. The next few days would shape the rest of my life. Either I’d die, or my family would realise they’d made a mistake.

The house was quiet when I stepped inside, and dust dulled the polished surfaces. Last time, the servants had treated me like a clueless human ready to be chewed up by Nathan, and he’d had that woman fucking him by the pool.

And this was where I’d succumbed to an alpha’s command for the first time. It seemed a lifetime ago.

At the foot of the stairs, I paused, staring down the hallway. His playroom was there, so blatantly, unapologetically, and accessible to anyone. This was the man who claimed to be my solution. The man who propositioned hotel maids, fucked women in the open, and ran illegal fighting circuits. How could he know the secrets of such an ancient coven?

My steps were heavy as I climbed the stairs. I found the room I’d had the last time and froze.

Hunter’s scent was all over it.

I inhaled, and my toes curled into the rug. The bed was unmade more rumpled than I’d left it. He’d been here. Images swarmed my mind, of what he might have done, of what I’d done myself. I’d woken tangled in the silk sheets after dreams of him that felt too real.

I lay on the bed and hugged the pillow, breathing him in. After everything that happened, everything we’d learned, I just wanted him close. I wanted his comfort, his arms around me.

I wanted him to tell me this was all bullshit, and that he would never hurt me.

My gaze fell to the scroll case in my hand, and my fingers tightened around it. I didn’t trust the Blackmores as far as I could throw them, but what if…

I threw the case, and it hit the rug with a soft thud. I didn’t want to think about that now. I wanted to bury my head in the sand and pretend none of this was happening.
