Chapter 161
MUNTER
When I opened my eyes again, everything was blurry, and I was chained up in a dark cell full of dust and cobwebe. It reeked of piss and magic. In the air, along the walls, on the silver bars. Even the silver chains holding me suspended from the Ceiling
Silver. Did they forget who I was?
That chanting was still ringing in my ears from the room above. Still groggy, I scanned the castle. Even more people had arrived after I’d passed out in pain. Hundreds of conversations were happening at once. The sound shot through my skull like a sharp knife.
The coven, mostly. There were barely any wolves left for miles around. I’d sent Tanner and the team away after I entered the castle
I groaned and let my head loll to the side. My muscles had seized, and my head pounded. Pain still radiated through my body in waves. Whatever magic they’d used packed a punch. I felt like I’d drunk a shit load of alcohol and woken up with a terrible hangover, which I hadn’t done since before my first shift.
They were the strongest coven for a reason. Anyone else might not have woken from that assault.
The chains rattled as I moved, testing how tightly they were bound to my wrists and ankles. Someone had stripped my top off and shoes, leaving me in only my trousers. I inhaled and then froze. I smelled my blood.
I looked down, and sure enough, someone had marked my chest. A big ‘X’ that wasn’t knitting back together. I could smell the rot on the edges of the wound. What the fuck had they done to me?
This was not the trap I’d been expecting.
But it was still good. I had more cards up my sleeve that they would never expect. Like the fact that I could hear them whispering even though I was in the depths of the castle.
…should have run it by me first, Kostas. I’m still your fucking king.”
I’d never heard that coward swearing before. He was always the epitome of elegance, hiding his real self behind manners and etiquette. Always doing ‘the right thing’ in front of his subjects.
“You’ve let too many things go already, Your Majesty,” Kostas said.
“Still not your call,” Christos shouted, and then he coughed and wheezed.
Wolves never got sick. This looming death was the wolf king’s retribution, a punishment from the Goddess. But I would claim that victory myself.
“The coven is here now. It will be fine.”
“Do you even know why I kept them at arm’s length?” Christos hissed. “You’ve doomed us all, Kostas.”
“I’ve saved us!” the arrogant fool shouted. “One more night and there would be nothing left of us.”
“I had a plan,” Christos said. “One where we didn’t have to die.”
“In case you didn’t notice,” Kostas hissed, “your dear little princess would rather whore herself outside than be with me.”
My blood boiled. Pressure built in my head and my chest. I would remember the prince’s words.

Chapter 161
“Katerina would not have chosen outsiders once she learned the truth. Now you’re as bad as that Lycan
And that was true. Once Kitty knew what I’d done and what I was still planning on doing, she would reject me. But I was preparing myself for that.
“It’s already done, Father,” Kostas said. “Perhaps it’s time for you to rest with Mother.”
Why was the wolf king even arguing? He could have easily commanded Kostas to do as he was told.
Unless he couldn’t?
That manic look in the prince’s eyes came back to my mind, and I wondered if it was his Ironclaw blood that had turned him into that.
“Katerina is on her way,” Kostas growled. “I’m going to get ready.

My body tensed more than it had with that attack. I’d known her first instinct would have been to save me, but Rivers should have known better than to allow that. I didn’t need saving, even if I had to face hundreds of the Blackmore coven members.
My beast surged. His thoughts were chaotic, and his head as groggy as mine, but he was intact. And the bond was intact. For a second, when that attack slammed into me, I’d felt the bond almost break apart, every thread of it twisting and pulling.
Like a rejection.
A forced rejection. No one should have been allowed that much power, especially over something the Goddess herself had allowed. My fury roared through me before I could stop it, but I forced it down. High emotions wouldn’t work in this situation. That was how mistakes were made.
Zachary and Kostas would get what was coming to them before the end of the night.
‘Kitty?’ I called in the mindlink.
No answer. But the bond was no longer taut. She was already close, moving fast.
My fists clenched. I expanded my senses and followed Kostas’s footfall to the other side of the castle. To the inner keep, where Katerina’s rooms were. I could hear her omegas whispering.
A door opened, and the voices cut out.
“Make sure the wedding dress is ready. The scouts say she’s ten minutes out.”
“Yes, Prince Kostas,” one of the omegas whispered.
Ten minutes. How many werewolves could I kill in ten minutes?
I wrapped the chain around my hand and pulled. Nothing. Not even the smallest movement.
But the wound on my chest throbbed like someone had rubbed salt into it.
I gritted my teeth and tried again, but the results were the same. This time, the pain flared across my chest.
I looked down and saw red, veiny wisps forming around the wound. My beast retreated, as is whatever the fuck that was had burnt him.
Had I misjudged this situation? Had I just thrown myself into their hands like an idiot?
Gritting my teeth, I tugged both sides of the chains. My chest burned as if I’d just lit myself on fire. The veins thickened and spread.

Chapter 161
I was infected with something. Something I couldn’t feel inside me. Something I couldn’t smell.
The prophecy came to mind, sending ice down my spine.
The hum engine in the distance caught my ear. A helicopter. I’d lured Kitty right to this shit show.
So this was how they would make me kill my mate?
