Chapter 27
HUNTER
Why the hell did she smell like Nathan Rivers?
My beast roared the moment she slid down the door and slumped forward. First, this bastard who attacked her, and now Nathan Rivers. Christos Lordswood’s minion. What the fuck had he done to her?
Panic cut through my anger. When I scooped her up, she was limp but breathing, her heart racing. That wolf’s stench clung to her like a second skin. I couldn’t think. Couldn’t decide whether to hunt Rivers or keep Kitty safe in my arms.
I carried her to the bedroom, setting her on the mattress. After the shitty day I’d had, I hadn’t had time to put trackers on her. I’d assumed she was still in her classes.
The Bureau had warned Nathan more than once about the reports young human girls had made about him. A playboy rogue alpha who didn’t care about laws, choosing pleasure over duty.
And now his scent was all over Kitty.
She moaned, her heartbeat slowing, and only then did my beast ease enough for me to think. Had Nathan targeted her because of our link, or had she caught his eye like the other girls? Either way, I was trapped. Protecting Kitty from two predators, just to keep my beast in check.
Kitty’s eyes flew open. She bolted upright, her eyes widening when she saw me. Beneath Nathan’s stink, I caught a hint of antiseptic and fresh blood. She was still not healing.
“I’m fine. Just overworked,” she said, swinging her legs off the bed.
She disappeared into the bathroom before I could stop her, and then the shower started running. I’d let her hide for now.
Minutes later, I was on the road, my beast simmering for blood. Nathan’s car was just leaving the entrance with only his driver inside when I pulled up to the five-star hotel. I slammed the door, ignoring the bows from the doormen as I stormed past them.
Nathan already knew I was there. He strolled casually to the elevators, hands in his pockets, and a long coat slung over his shoulders like he didn’t give a shit. I stopped beside him without a word, my jaw clenched. The humans didn’t dare follow:
The elevator lurched upwards.
“Explain yourself,” I growled.
“I don’t know what you mean, Your Highness.”
Nathan used that title like an insult. My beast surged, releasing my aura fully as I turned to face him. Nathan winced, growling low in his chest before he dropped to his knees. For an alpha as arrogant as him, his submission would feel like a blade in his chest.
“Speak,” I snapped, my claws digging into my palm.
“She had your scent,” Nathan forced out. “I got curious.”
My hand shot to his throat, slamming him against the mirrored wall. The glass cracked, and Nathan’s breath wheezed out of him. I felt his aura surge. His wolf was pushing against mine, fighting my dominance. But forcing him down was child’s play.
“Curious? You knew she’d been with me, but you still touched her?”
“I didn’t think you’d claimed her,” Nathan wheezed. “She’s just human.”
Claimed.
That word cut me deep.
I shoved him down, moving back as the asshole fell at my feet. Any other time, seeing him sprawled out in filthy, so undignified, would have made me laugh. But I was barely holding my beast back. Kitty wasn’t going to tell me the truth, so I needed Nathan alive.
“I haven’t claimed her,” I growled. “But you’re one incident away from me sending you back for Lordswood to deal with.”
Nathan coughed, inhaling deeply to regain his breath as he pushed back to his feet. I caught the smirk before he ducked his head. He’d touch her on purpose. To see how deep Kitty had gotten under my skin. I’d played right into his hands.
“Where did you meet her?”
“Outside the Bureau. Hard to miss all those curves and-”
My fist cracked against his jaw, and blood sprayed the mirrored wall behind him. The force of my punch surprised me. My beast hadn’t hidden his intention to kill. Nathan staggered, his blood flowing freely from his nose. His skin was already knitting back together. Sometimes I forgot how strong this fucker was.
“Stay the fuck away from her. She’s Bureau business.”
The lie fell easily from my lips. It was better to say that than admit I had a weakness. Even better than letting Nathan think I’d claimed a human. Someone bastards like Nathan and that other fucker could use against me. Getting attached to a human was worse than claiming an omega.
Nathan wiped his nose on the sleeve of his suit. He didn’t meet my gaze, but I still caught the glint in his eyes.
“Bureau business? Maybe I should get a job there, see if they let me fill some of the humans with my cu-”
I smashed his face again, and this time he stumbled back, swearing as his nose started healing all over again.
“Is that why you approached her?” I growled. “To see how hard I’d punch your stupid face?”
“I won’t meet her again,” Nathan said.
I sensed the lie and his words, and my beast surged again. My clothes tightened on me, and my claws lengthened. I towered over Nathan, and a low growl rumbled from my chest. Nathan dropped to his knees. again, and for the first time since I’d cornered him, his fear saturated the room.
