“Breaking news-
The anchor’s urgent voice cut through the room as the screen shifted to chaotic footage flashing sirens, scattered debris, and a vehicle so completely wrecked it was barely recognizable.
“President Danes of Danes Enterprise and CEO Vincent Rouy were involved in a vehicular accident early this morning,” the anchor reported, his tone steady but grave.
“Initial investigations indicate that the two men had come from a bar and were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.”
The footage zoomed in–twisted metal, shattered glass, the violent aftermath of impact.
“Unfortunately, both men did not survive,” he continued solemnly,
“Their vehicle crashed into a garbage dump truck parked along the roadside, which was in the process of collecting waste.” The camera shifted again, capturing the scene from another angle–the stark reality of the tragedy impossible to ignore. “This comes at a particularly difficult time for the two executives,” the anchor added, “as both had recently faced significant financial setbacks following the bankruptcy of their respective companies.”
Behind him, more footage played.
Mirriam and Maricris clung to each other, their cries raw and unrestrained as the bodies-covered, lifeless-were wheeled past them on stretchers and into waiting vehicles. Their grief echoed even through the screen, sharp and piercing
Cassie stood still, her gaze locked onto the television, absorbing every detail in silence.
Then, almost instinctively, she turned her head toward Ashton. Before she could even speak, he met her eyes.
“I had nothing to do with this,” Ashton said calmly, as if he had already anticipated the question forming in her mind.
“Whatever happened… was their own negligence.”
Cassie studied him for a brief moment-then nodded. She believed him.
Her eyes returned to the screen, though the images no longer held the same weight.
“Their punishment came sooner than expected,” she murmured quietly, exhaling a slow breath.
“The universe claimed justice on its own… without staining our hands with the vengeance they deserve.f
There was no triumph in her voice-only a subdued, complicated acceptance. Still, a faint unease lingered.
Even standing beside Ashton Pierce someone deeply entangled with power, influence, and people capable of ruthless decisions
-Cassie knew she hadn’t grown used to it.
Not completely.
Kamilla unsettled her.
Lia… even more so.
Women who could kill without hesitation. Without remorse.
And now
or not
Cassie’s gaze lowered slightly, her thoughts turning inward. She was part of that world now. Whether she wanted it
And surviving it… wasn’t just a challenge. It was something she would have to learn for the rest of her lite
Cassie’s gaze lingered on the screen, drawn not to the wreckage-but to Mirriam in the background.
The woman who once carried herself with untouchable pride now looked… undone.

Her cries were raw, unrestrained Gone was the polished composure, the effortless arrogance of a wealthy heiress who believed the world would always bend in her favor. In its place was something fragile–someone stripped bare by loss, by consequence, by reality.
Cassie felt an unexpected pang in her chest. Pity.
Six years ago, she had looked at Mirriam with something close to envy-her life, her status, the ease with which she moved through a world Cassie could barely survive in. But now…
Now, Mirriam looked more broken than she had ever been.

Her arrogance had not just faded-it had been completely torn away, leaving nothing but grief and helplessness in its wake. “Who would have thought…” Cassie murmured softly, almost to herself, her eyes never leaving the screen.
“That a day like this would come… where Mirriam would lose everything.”
She let out a quiet breath, her expression unreadable.
“Life really is a wheel of fate,” she added, shaking her head faintly.
Once at the top. Now at the bottom. And the turn had been merciless.
Cassie’s thoughts were cut short by a firm knock at the door. Her head lifted instantly, eyes flicking toward Ashton in silent question.
“Come in,” Ashton said, his voice calm but commanding.
The door opened without delay. The moment Cassie saw who stepped inside, her brows drew together slightly.
