I made my way downstairs to find Daniel gone, the kitchen quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator. My phone buzzed. I checked and was relieved to see that it was Cole.

“Good morning, Amy. I wanted to give you a heads–up. Daniel’s out monitoring the border. He left instructions to keep you updated.”

I nodded, though he couldn’t see me. “Anything unusual?”

“There are reports. Patrols spotted activity near the southern perimeter. Could be scouts, could be someone else. Daniel’s keeping close watch.”
