Walking into the gala with Daniel beside me felt like stepping into a spotlight I had earned the right to own.
The room was full–alphas, CEOs, investors, public figures. Cameras flashed. People whispered.
But with Daniel’s hand resting securely on my waist, I didn’t flinch. His presence calmed me.
I scanned the hall quickly, keeping my expression neutral. A live band playing something slow. Everyone dressed like they were desperate for attention. Nothing new.
Then my gaze landed on Clara.
She stood across the hall beside Mark, her hand looped through his arm like she needed him to hold her up. She stared at me with a smug smile, as if she expected me to look away.
I didn’t.
I lifted my chin and smiled back.
Clara’s expression twitched. She wasn’t expecting that. She always wanted me rattled. She always needed the reaction. But I refused to give her one–especially tonight.
I breathed in slowly, forcing my wolf to settle. My wolf wanted her throat, but I wanted something better. I wanted her downfall.
Daniel leaned close and whispered, “You good?”
“I’m perfect,” I said.
We walked further into the hall, found our assigned table, and took our seats. People kept approaching Daniel, shaking his hand, praising him for something or another, but my focus drifted back to Clara every few seconds. She kept peeking at me, like she was checking if I was watching her. Old habit.
She used to follow me with her eyes everywhere we went. Even as children.
Some things didn’t change.
The host–Mr. Hugh Remington finally climbed the stage. He wore a wide smile that matched the size of his ego. Investors loved him. CEOs begged for his attention. Anyone associated with him grew richer overnight.
His presence alone could make or break a company.
He tapped the microphone. “Good evening, everyone.”
The crowd quieted instantly.
“Tonight is special. Of course, it is a charity ball. But that’s not the only reason we’re here.” His eyes swept the hall before landing squarely on me. “We are also here to appreciate someone whose strength has inspired many. A woman who has faced storms and hasn’t allowed any of them to drown her. A woman who
continues to rise.”
People turned toward me. Whispers erupted.

Daniel reached for my hand under the table, squeezingently.

Hugh continued, “Please, everyone, let’s acknowledge Amy Carter, our Luna of the Year.”
Applause rolled through the room. Cameras swung toward me. I kept my posture straight, my smile small but steady. I wasn’t going to pretend to be humble. I earned every bit of recognition. Every struggle. Every
scar.
Hugh spoke a little more about the charity and the investors supporting the event, but I barely heard it. I focused on staying calm. Focused. Present.
I could feel Clara’s stare burning from across the room.
When the host finished the opening speech, waiters began serving drinks and people moved around freely again.
Daniel and I talked to a few acquaintances who came to greet us. I tried to enjoy the normalcy, but my eyes caught movement–Clara.
Mark walked beside her like he always did. He couldn’t hide his discomfort; the tension in his shoulders gave him away.
But he never stopped her.
They stopped right at our table.
Clara put on the sweetest, fakest smile I had seen in months. “Amy,” she said in a soft voice that made my wolf roll her eyes. “Daniel.”
Daniel didn’t bother responding.
Mark forced a greeting. “Good evening.”
I nodded once. “Evening.”
Clara clasped her hands together like a shy schoolgirl. “I wanted to come and say hello. I didn’t even know you’d be here. I’m so glad you came. You look better than the last time I saw you.”
Fake concern. Fake softness. Classic Clara.
Daniel stiffened beside me, ready for anything.
I responded calmly. “Thank you.”
Her smile twitched. I wasn’t giving her anything, and that annoyed her. She needed a scene. She always needed drama.
And she created it.
Clara reached for a champagne glass from a passing waiter’s tray. Instead of drinking it, she tilted her wrist just slightly and splashed it against her own dress.
She gasped loudly. “Amy!”
The entire table froze.

Clara clutched the soaked fabric dramatically. “Why would you do that?”
Daniel leaned forward. “Are you insane?”
People around us turned immediately, curious, judgmental, cager for gossip.
