I called for a meeting before sunrise.

The Northern sub pack leaders arrived one after another, some in human form, some shifting at the edge of the clearing before settling into bodies they used for council matters.

The air carried alertness. They had all felt the tension spreading across the territory. Rogues never moved this close to settled borders without a reason.

I stood at the head of the long table inside the council hall and waited until everyone was seated.

“No posturing today,” I said. “No pride games. We’re here to protect our people.”

That got their attention.

Eamon, who oversaw the eastern ridge, leaned forward. “The attacks are getting closer to the wood

settlements.”

“I know,” I said. “That’s why retaliation is not the priority.”

A few brows lifted. No one interrupted me, but I felt the surprise move through the room.

“Our civilians come first,” I continued. “Families who live near the borders don’t have reinforced guards or early–warning wards. They need presence, patrols, and clear escape routes.”

Jarek, one of the older alphas, nodded slowly. “You’re saying we hold ground, not chase blood.”

“I’m saying we don’t give whoever’s behind this what they want.”

That settled it.

I activated the Alpha channel and let my authority carry, not as pressure, but as weight.

“I’m assigning rotating patrols along the northern and western borders. Three–shift coverage. Wolves who know the land. No lone movements. No hero acts.”

Murmurs of agreement followed.

I pointed to the map projected on the wall. “These settlements here and here get reinforced guards starting tonight. Anyone displaced gets shelter inside the inner zones.”

“And the rogues?” Eamon asked.

“We watch them,” I said. “We learn.”

I saw the doubt, but I didn’t soften it.

“This isn’t a call for submission,” I said. “But I need clarity. Every pack leader here will swear loyalty to the North. Not to me. To the territory and the people in it.”

One by one, they stood.

“I swear,” Jarek said first. “To the North.”

Others followed. No resistance. No hesitation.

When it was done, my wolf settled slightly. Not calm. Just focused.

After the meeting, I stayed behind with the border commanders. Reports were spread across the table, scent maps layered over satellite images. I scanned them carefully.

One report made my chest tighten.

“Run that again,” I said.

The scout who filed it stepped forward. “Tracks showed controlled spacing. No overlap. No frenzy marks.”

“Show me the scent analysis.”

He tapped the screen. The data shifted.

My wolf reacted before my mind finished processing it. Not aggression. Recognition.

I clenched my jaw.

“That scent trail isn’t random,” I said. “It’s masked, but not well enough.”

Eamon frowned. “You recognize it?”

“I recognize what doesn’t belong,” I said.

Southern territory used different binding oils for their patrols. Different training. Different ways of masking pack scent. Whoever taught these rogues had experience.

“Don’t say it unless you’re sure,” Jarek warned.

“I’m not accusing,” I replied. “I’m observing.”

I straightened. “No open confrontation. Not yet. I want intelligence. Quiet tracking. Intercept communications if you can. Watch the supply movement.”

“And if they cross again?” Eamon asked.

“We defend,” I said. “We do not pursue into unknown ground.”

They nodded.

When the room cleared, I linked Amy.

“I’m shifting more territory focus to the borders,” I told her. “I want you fully empowered inside Carter

She didn’t hesitate. “I already noticed pressure points,” she said. “I can handle it.”

“I know,” I replied. “If anyone questions your authority, they answer to me.”

There was a pause. Then her voice softened. “Be careful.”

I ended the link before my wolf could push too much emotion through it.

Later that afternoon, I walked the outer settlement myself. Houses were modest. Wards were weak. People watched me with a mix of respect and worry.

An older woman approached. “They came at night,” she said. “Didn’t howl. Didn’t rush. They knew where the livestock was.”

“How many?” I asked.

“Four. Maybe five.”

“Did they speak?”

She shook her head. “But they moved like soldiers.”

That confirmed it.

Back at headquarters, another scout waited for me, breathing hard.

“Alpha,” he said. “We followed the eastern trail farther than planned.”

“And?”

He swallowed. “One of them shifted briefly. Just long enough.”

I said nothing.

“He bore a mark,” the scout continued. “Southern pack origin. Not a rogue brand.”

The room went quiet.

I dismissed everyone except Eamon.

“This changes things,” he said,

“It confirms them,” I replied. “Someone is guiding them.”

“Your father–in–law’s territory borders the south,” Eamon added carefully.

“I’m aware,” I said. “That doesn’t make him the only possibility.”

I stared at the map again. Rogues at the borders. Corporate resistance at the center. Pressure applied from multiple sides.
