DANIEL

Cole did, for short stretches in the passenger seat, but my mind sta d active the entire night. I kept replaying the timing, the movements, the way the facility had prepared without knowing for sure whether I would act. That meant anticipation, not reaction. Someone was guiding them.
By morning, my source reached out again.
Not directly. Never directly.
A data fragment appeared in a shared archive I had seeded weeks ago. No message attached. No identifier. Just a short update buried under unrelated logistics entries.
Transfer window adjusted. Maternal case prioritized. Secondary route activated.
That was all.
I pulled the vehicle off the road and shut off the engine.
Cole stirred. “What is it?”
“They moved the window.”
“Forward or back?”
“Forward,” I said. “By days, not hours.”
He rubbed his face. “So she’s not where we were watching.”
“No,” I said. “But she passed through something connected to it.”
Cole sat up fully. “Your source is close.”
“Yes.”
“Close enough to see that?”
“Close enough to feel pressure.”
He nodded slowly. “Meaning whoever’s running this knows there’s a problem.”

I forwarded the fragment to a burner device, isolated from anything tied to the pack. Then I destroyed the access path I’d used to receive it. That door wouldn’t open again.
We drove east, then cut south, following the secondary route the data suggested. It wasn’t marked as medical anymore. It was buried under agricultural transport permits and private security escorts.
“They’re hiding her in in systems,” Cole said after reviewing the route.
“They always do,” I replied.
Midday brought us to a regional transit yard. It looked ordinary. Freight containers. Maintenance crews. Nothing that would draw attention. But the movement pattern didn’t fit the posted schedule.
Cole scanned the perimeter. “If she passed through here, it wasn’t long.”
“I know.”
We didn’t enter. We watched.
A small convoy arrived an hour later. Two security vehicles. One enclosed transport unit with reinforced sides. No markings. No visible medical staff.
Cole’s jaw tightened. “That’s it.”
“Possibly.”
We waited until the convoy moved again, then followed at a distance that wouldn’t trigger escorts trained to notice tails.
As we drove, my burner device vibrated once.
Another fragment.
You’re close. Don’t rush. She was here, not now.
I exhaled slowly.
Cole noticed. “Your source again.”
“Yes.”
“They’re warning you.”

“They’re telling me I’m being tested.”

We followed the convoy for forty minutes before it split. One vehicle peeled off toward a pu highway. The transport unit turned onto an unpaved road that cut through private land.
We chose the transport.
The road ended at a small compound surrounded by tempor. stood idle. Lights were on inside the main structure.
fencing. Construction vehic
Cole whispered, “This oks rushed.”
“It is.”
We parked out of sight and approached on foot, moving slowly, checking sightlines, counting personnel.
Inside the compound, activity was high. Too high.
“They’re clearing out,” Cole said quietly.
“Yes.”
We waited until the transport unit was unloaded. No stretcher. No visible patient. Only sealed containers.
My chest tightened despite my effort to stay steady.
“She’s not here,” I said.
Cole didn’t argue.
We moved closer anyway, careful not to be seen. Inside one of the auxiliary rooms, I caught it.
Her scent.
Faint. Recent. Not hours old.
I stopped moving.
Cole froze beside me. “Daniel.”
“She was here,” I said. “Very recently.”
“How recently?”
“Minutes. Maybe less.”

We searched quickly but quietly. The room held medical equipment stripped down to essentials. No personal items. No signs of struggle.
“She was moved again,” Cole said.
“Yes.”
“And they knew to move her before we arrived.”
I nodded. “Which means the lead wasn’t meant to deliver her to us.”
“It was meant to guide us.”
“Or measure us.”
My burner vibrated again.
This time, there was a warning I hadn’t seen before.
They accelerated because of you. Be careful what you trigger next.
I closed my eyes briefly.
Cole watched me. “They’re playing you.”
“They’re reacting to me,” I said. “That’s different.”
“How?”
“If they were in control, they wouldn’t need to rush.”
We withdrew before security patterns reset. No alarms. No pursuit.
Back in the vehicle, Cole slammed his palm lightly against the dashboard. “Damn it.”
I stayed quiet.
“She was right there,” he said. “We could smell her.”
“I know.”
“And now she’s gone again.”
“Yes.”
He turned to me. “How many times are you going to accept that?”
