Chapter 493 Gradual Strategy
DANIEL
I arrived at the receiving hall before sunrise.
The building had been cleared of its usual council banners. No colors. No symbols.

Finished!
Just stone, glass, and security positioned where they could see everything without being seen.
This wasn’t a trial yet. It was the beginning of one. The phase where procedures mattered more than accusations.
Amy was still asleep when I left. The doctor had warned her not to stress herself, and I intended. to keep that promise. She didn’t need to witness this part. Not yet.
Cole met me at the east entrance.
“They moved her an hour ago,” he said quietly as we walked. “Holding cell to intake corridor. No resistance.”
“Any requests?” I asked.
“Legal access. Medical review. And she asked who signed the transfer order.”
“That would be me.”
He nodded once. No judgment. Just fact.
The receiving hall opened into three separate chambers. Clara was brought into the center one, flanked by Northern security officers.
Her hands weren’t bound. That decision had been deliberate. This was not meant to look like punishment. It was meant to look controlled.
She looked thinner than the last time I had seen her. Tired, but alert. Her gaze lifted when she noticed me standing behind the glass partition.
She didn’t speak. Neither did I.
A clerk stepped forward and activated the record system.
“Proceeding with intake for Clara,” she said. “Subject present. Charges pending formal reading. This session documents custody transfer, rights acknowledgment, and preliminary assessment.”
Clara finally spoke.

“So this is how it starts.”
Her voice was steady. No shaking. No anger.
“Yes,” the clerk replied. “You will be informed of every stage”
“And how long will that take?”
“As long as required.”
Clara smiled faintly, then looked back at me. “Still like to be thorough, don’t you?”
I didn’t answer. This wasn’t the place for it.
The clerk continued. “You are entitled to representation. You may request counsel from the approved registry or nominate an external advocate, subject to review?
“I’ll nominate later,” Clara said. “I’d like to hear what I’m accused of first.”
“That will come during the formal opening,” the clerk replied. “Today is procedural”
Clara exhaled slowly. “Of course it is.”
A medic entered next, carrying a handheld scanner.
“Routine check,” he said. “Please remain still.”
Clara complied without protest. Her vitals appeared on the screen behind the glass. Stable. Elevated stress markers, but nothing alarming.
“Clear,” the medic said. “No immediate concerns.”
The clerk nodded and logged the result.
I stepped away from the glass and moved toward the observation corridor. Elias was not present. That had been expected. He wouldn’t show himself unless forced. This phase didn’t require him yet.
Cole followed me.
“She’s composed,” he said. “That worries some of the council members.”
“It should,” I replied. “She knows how systems work. She’s had time to prepare.”
“And you?”

She was led away without further comment.
The hall emptied slowly. Systems powered down. Logs sealed. The first layer of silence settled.
Cole exhaled. “That went smoother than expected.”
“Smooth doesn’t mean safe,” I said. “Now comes pressure.”
“From where?”
“Everywhere.”
I returned to my office mid–morning. Reports were already waiting. Requests for access. Questions about jurisdiction. Quiet inquiries disguised as protocol checks.
One message stood out. From the Southern Alpha’s representative.
“Request acknowledgment of trial initiation,” it read. “Seeking assurance of impartiality.”
I typed a brief response.
“Process has begun. Oversight is shared. Outcomes will follow evidence.”
I didn’t add anything else.
Amy woke later that day. I sat beside her bed and told her only what she needed to know.
“The receiving phase is complete,” I said. “She’s in holding. The trial is moving forward.”
Amy nodded slowly. “Was she calm?”
“Yes.”
“That doesn’t surprise me.”
