Chapter 506 Bad Decision
DANIEL
The council hall smelled of old stone and patience stretched too thin.
That was the first thing I noticed as I stepped inside, shoulders squared, spine straight, face neutral. The room had witnessed centuries of verdicts–some fair, some bloody, most wrapped in the language of “necessity.” Today, it would witness the beginning of Clara’s reckoning. Not the end. Just the slow, grinding start.
Amy walked beside me. Calm. Composed. Stronger than anyone in this room gave her credit for.
That alone irritated Mark.
I didn’t need to look at him to feel it. His presence had always been like that–quiet, coiled, watching for weakness the way wolves watched injured prey.
Once, I might have mistaken it for loyalty. Once, I had been unconscious, dragged through fate like a body through water, while decisions were made in my name.
Never again.
The elders were already seated, robes heavy with embroidery and power. Elder Rowan sat at the center, his fingers steepled, eyes sharp. He wasn’t smiling. That was a good sign. Rowan didn’t smile when he planned to be honest.
“Alpha Daniel,” he said. “Luna Amy.”
Amy inclined her head. I nodded once. Respect without submission.
Across the room, Mark stood near the eastern pillar, arms crossed. He hadn’t been summoned officially, but he’d come anyway. Of course he had. He always needed to see things for himself. Control required proximity.
His
eyes
flicked to Amy. Stayed there half a second too long.
I noticed. I always noticed.

“Let us begin,” Rowan said. “This is not the trial. This is the receiving process. Evidence will be logged. Testimonies will be scheduled. Anyone connected to Clara’s actions will be subject to investigation.”
Mark’s jaw tightened.

A murmur rolled through the room. Some curious. Some anxious. Some already calculating what they needed to hide. Clara hadn’t acted alone–that much was obvious. People like her rarely did. They convinced others they were necessary. Useful. Harmless.
Amy’s fingers brushed mine.
“You alright?” I asked quietly.
She nodded. “I’ve been through worse.”
That was true. And unfair.
The guards moved first. Heavy boots. Controlled steps. They dragged no one, but they escorted Clara in chains, wrists bound with silver–threaded cuffs. Her posture was straight. Her chin lifted. Even now, she refused to look small.
She didn’t look at me.
She looked at Amy.
There it was. Not rage. Not hatred.
Calculation.
The room stilled as Clara was brought to the center circle. The markings on the floor glowed faintly–old magic meant to suppress lies, not force truth, but make deception uncomfortable. Not painful. Just… hard to sustain.
Clara smiled.
“I was wondering when you’d stop hiding behind the ceremony,” she said calmly.
Rowan didn’t react. “You will speak when asked.”
“Of course,” Clara replied. “I wouldn’t want to disrupt tradition.”
Amy
didn’t flinch. Didn’t respond. That unsettled Clara more than any insult could have.
“Clara,” Rowan said, “you are formally charged with conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, manipulation of pack bonds, and collaboration with foreign powers.”
Mark shifted.
Barely noticeable. But I saw it.

“Do you deny these charges?” Rowan asked.
“I deny the narrative,” Clara said smoothly. “Not the events.”
A ripple moved through the elders. That was new.
Rowan leaned back slightly. “Explain.”
Clara turned, slow, deliberate, eyes sweeping the room. “Everything I did was to protect this pack. Amy’s kidnapping exposed weaknesses. Daniel’s absence left a vacuum. The Southern Alpha circled like a vulture. I acted.”
“You orchestrated it,” Amy said quietly.
Clara’s gaze snapped to her. “I directed it.”
The difference mattered to her. It always had.
“You caused suffering,” I said. My voice echoed more than I intended. “You broke trust. You used people.”
“I used the opportunity,” Clara replied. “Just like Mark.”
The room inhaled sharply.
Mark’s head snapped up. “That’s enough.”
Rowan’s eyes cut to him. “You will remain silent unless called.”
Clara laughed softly. “Oh, but he should speak. He has such a long history with Amy.”
Amy’s hand tightened in mine.
I felt the old story crawl out of the shadows–the engagement Mark never let go of, the bond forced on Amy while I lay unconscious, the way she’d been treated like a prize instead of a
person.
Clara had claimed Mark once. Not out of kindness. Out of strategy. She’d wanted control for herself.
“You’re deflecting,” I said. “This is about your crimes.”
“Everything is about leverage,” Clara countered. “You of all people should know that, Daniel. You woke up mated to a woman who had already been claimed by another man’s intent.”
Mark’s control cracked.

“That was never-” he started.

“Enough,” Rowan said sharply. “Mark, step forward.”
The silence was brutal.
Mark hesitated. Just a fraction too long.
Then he moved.
