The morning light fell through the window, and I felt it on my skin as I stretched slowly in bed.

Daniel was beside me, sitting on the edge, reviewing the latest security reports. Even in quiet moments, he carried the weight of vigilance, but I could see the relief in his eyes now that Clara’s trial had been contained for the day and Mark’s movements were fully monitored.

I reached over, brushing a strand of hair from his face. “You need a break,” I said softly. “Even just a few minutes.”

He glanced at me, a faint smile crossing his face. “Breaks aren’t exactly part of the schedule when Clara’s trial and everything else are ongoing.”

I laughed lightly. “Then at least hold my hand for a moment.”

He took my hand in both of his. The warmth of his touch calmed me. I rested my head against his shoulder, letting the tension of the past weeks drain slightly.

“Everything is under control for now,” I said. “We handled the council, Mark, and the factions. For a few hours, we can just… be.”

Daniel tightened his grip around my hand. “Being with you is enough for me,” he said, his voice low. “Nothing else matters right now.”

I felt the familiar pull in my chest, the comfort of his presence, the protective energy he always carried.

His wolf had a constant awareness, a subtle hum beneath the surface that made me feel safe. I leaned closer. “I can feel your wolf,” I said. “Always aware, always on guard.”

He chuckled quietly. “It’s impossible to turn it off. But right now, it’s calm. Just mine for you.”

I reviewed the documents while Daniel stood behind me, his hands resting lightly on my shoulders.

Later that evening, we walked together in the enclosed northern compound. The air was crisp, and the faint scent of pine lingered.

“I understand,” I said. “But I don’t want to live only in observation. I want to enjoy moments with you, Daniel. Even if just for a few hours, even if we are aware.”

He smiled and took my hand. “Then we find time. No matter what else is happening, no one can take that
