Chapter 537 Clearer Position

The day of the summit arrived without noise. No crowds gathered. No announcements were made to the wider packs. Everything about it was controlled.
That alone told me how fragile the situation was. When power feels stable, people display it. When it feels threatened, they hide it behind procedure.
I left the compound early with Cole and a reduced security team. Northern oversight handled every checkpoint.
The neutral site was an old administrative complex that had been stripped of insignia years ago. No banners. No territorial markings. Just concrete, glass, and clean lines.
“This place hasn’t been used in a long time,” Cole said as we passed through the final gate.
“That’s the point,” I replied. “No history to lean on.”
Inside, the main chamber had already been prepared. One long table. Equal seating. Recording equipment placed openly in each corner. No blind spots. I approved the layout with a nod and took my seat.
The Southern delegation arrived ten minutes later. Their representative walked in first, composed, followed by two advisors. No guards. He met my gaze and inclined his head.
“Alpha Daniel,” he said. “Thank you for agreeing to this.”
“You requested it,” I replied. “We agreed under conditions.”
“Yes,” he said. “We accepted them.”
We changed no further pleasantries. The council elders took their seats along the side, observers rather
rticipants. Cole stood near the rear with his team, silent and alert.

Southern representative nodded. “Understood.”
Then state your position,” the elder said.
The representative folded his hands on the table. “The Southern Alpha maintains that he had no involvement in the abduction of Amy of the North. He recognizes the harm caused and regrets that Southern–affiliated individuals may have acted without authorization.”
“Elias,” I said.
“Yes,” the representative replied. “And others who acted under his direction.”
“Acted using Southern resources,” I added.
The representative hesitated for a fraction of a second. Some resources were misused.”

“That misuse extended to internal Northern collaborators,” I said. “Including Clara.”
“Yes,” he said. “We acknowledge her role.”
“You acknowledge her role,” I repeated. “But you deny command responsibility.”
“That is correct,” he said.

I leaned forward slightly. “Then explain the financial transfers routed through Southern–controlled shells.”
The representative exhaled slowly. “Those funds were allocated for regional security.”
“Security against what?” I asked.
“Instability,” he replied.
“Instability created by the abduction of my mate?” I asked.
The elder raised a hand slightly, signaling restraint. I leaned back but kept my eyes on the representative.
“We are not here to argue definitions,” the representative said. “We are here to prevent escalation.”
“Escalation began when Amy was taken,” I said. “Everything since has been response.”
The representative nodded once. “Then let us speak plainly. The Southern Alpha is willing to cooperate fully with a joint review of Elias’s actions.”
“Elias is not present,” I said.
“He is unavailable,” the representative replied.
“That is unacceptable,” I said. “You request cooperation while shielding the person who executed the crime.”
The room stayed quiet. The elder allowed the silence to stretch before speaking.
“What are you offering?” the elder asked the representative.
“A formal non–aggression pact,” the representative said. Shared intelligence channels. And a binding agreement to prevent future unilateral operations.”
“And accountability?” I asked.
“For those directly involved,” he said. “Yes.”
“Not sufficient,” I said.
The representative looked at me carefully. “What would be sufficient?”
I answered without hesitation. “Full access to Elias. Financial transparency. And a written acknowledgment that the abduction was a violation of inter–pack law.”
The representative’s jaw tightened. “That would expose the Southern Alpha to internal backlash.”
“That is not our concern,” I said.

She turned to face me. “Then we stay ahead of it.”
I nodded. “The trial continues. Clara remains in hold. Mark stays under watch.”
“And me?” she asked.

She gave a small smile. “Safe doesn’t mean silent.”
