Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 1

Chapter 1 Time for Her to Wake Up

Without warning, Hugh Cavill’s first love, Megan Ridley—the woman who had always held a special place in his heart—returned to the country after six years apart.

To make matters worse, she brought her five-year-old son with her.

Since then, Hugh had been traveling constantly for work and hadn’t been home in over a month.

Today marked the third anniversary of his marriage to Bethan Olsen.

Bethan prepared a candlelit dinner and wrapped his gift, then texted Hugh.

Around nine that evening, instead of hearing from Hugh, Bethan got a call from his sister, Gwen Cavill.

“Look at what I just sent you,” Gwen said tersely before hanging up.

Bethan opened their text thread.

One glance was all it took. The smile froze on her face.

The plate slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor. Sharp pieces cut her ankle and blood began to flow, but she didn’t even notice.

Gwen had sent screenshots from Hugh’s Instagram—images of Hugh at a beach with his first love, celebrating their son’s birthday with fireworks.

Bethan bent down, grabbed her phone, and scrolled through the photos: a pristine beach, an elegant yacht, colorful fireworks, and scattered rose petals.

There was her husband, holding a four-or five-year-old boy in one arm while his other hand—still wearing his wedding ring—wrapped intimately around Megan’s waist.

The pictures looked like a fairy tale, with a caption that read: Homemade blueberry cake for my favorite people.

You could feel the love radiating from the screen.

Bethan’s mind went blank.

Frantically, she opened Hugh’s Instagram profile.

It was empty.

Bethan opened her mouth but couldn’t make a sound.

She realized Hugh must have blocked her or hidden his posts from her at some point.

These screenshots destroyed the last shred of hope she’d been clinging to.

Bethan called Hugh, not willing to give up easily.

When he didn’t answer, she called again and again.

After the third time her call was hung up, she got a message from Hugh.

Just one word: [Busy.]

So impatient.

Helplessness, anger, jealousy, and resentment all churned inside her.

Bethan curled up on the floor, burying her face in her hands. It felt like someone was ripping her heart apart, and she could barely breathe.

She grabbed fistfuls of her hair and screamed, then dissolved into sobs.

At the knock on the door, she forced herself up to answer it.

Gwen’s eyes widened at Bethan’s appearance. “Bethan, are you okay?”

Bethan shook her head numbly, tears still wet on her cheeks.

Gwen’s hands clenched into fists. “Bethan, we need to go find my brother right now. Let’s go to the beach!”

Bethan took a shaky breath, slowly regaining her composure. “Gwen, I need to handle things between your brother and me on my own.”

Her mother had just had a heart bypass surgery and was still in the hospital. She couldn’t fall apart at this moment.

It was already dawn when Gwen left.

Bethan wandered around the room like a ghost.

She and Hugh had been childhood sweethearts.

Everyone in their circle knew that she had loved Hugh since they were kids, and they also knew that Hugh had an unrequited first love.

Hugh only married her due to family expectations and pressure.

During their three years of marriage, Bethan believed that if she loved him hard enough, she could eventually win his heart.

Instead, she got the news that he’d reconnected with his first love. Her childhood crush, her adult devotion, twenty-five years of her life—all of it wasted.

It was time to stop fooling herself.
