Once Hugh had heard all that, his expression darkened to something frightening. His grip on the glass tightened until his knuckles turned white.

With a look of guilt, she said softly, “Hugh, my son and I have already brought you so much trouble. If I take your money too, I’ll have no right to stay here.”
