Chapter 167 Let’s Make a Deal

Lucky Draw

Seeing no reaction, Hugh’s grip on her wrist tightened instinctively.

“My grandfather broke us up, threatening her family to force her abroad to marry someone else,” he continued. “She suffered years of abuse, multiple miscarriages, and severe depression. She ended up coming back with her kid because she had no choice.”

He went on, “Bethan, I admit I lied to stay away for a month, making you lose trust in me. I admit I’ve hurt you, neglected you, for Megan and her kid.

“But I’ve never once thought of divorcing you for her. I haven’t betrayed our marriage, and I haven’t betrayed you.”

Their eyes locked.

Bethan countered, “You’ve said all this-what are you trying to prove?”

Hugh’s brow furrowed.

“I could feel your admiration for Megan,” she said, “your pity for her, your lingering regrets.”

Hugh slid his hand to the back of her neck, gently pulling

her closer.

“Bethan, I only feel an obligation to Megan and her son, not the feelings you’re imagining,” he said. “Pretend they don’t exist. Can we just be okay again?”

Bethan tilted her head slightly, looking into his eyes. “You knew you were hurting me and still chose to stay with her. That wasn’t a mistake. That was your choice.”

Hugh, losing control, pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly, refusing to let go.

“Bethan, I’m just looking out for Megan and her kid,” he said. “You and I are the ones married.”

He didn’t dare tell her that Megan’s son wasn’t his.

Bethan’s cheek pressed against his chest, his strong heartbeat echoing beneath. Her heart, though, was eerily

calm.

“I don’t want a marriage like this,” she said.

Hugh didn’t respond, just held her tighter.

Even if she didn’t want it, he couldn’t let her go.

Their conversation ended there.

In the hospital room, Hugh held Bethan quietly.

She let him, not arguing, not crying, not making a scene.

Tonight, Hugh had refused to divorce and promise Megan and Hudson a future, all to shield them from Harvey’s

wrath.

Megan had saved him in college, leaving him with a debt of guilt.

She’d suffered abroad for six years, enduring torment, and finally returned with a son.

But Megan hadn’t been clever enough to make Hugh abandon everything for them.

Béthan’s only way out was to get Megan to drop her 17:00

guard.

She needed to team up with Megan to push her into Hugh’s rightful place as his wife.

Only then could she escape this marriage for good.

Bethan nestled quietly in Hugh’s arms, but he felt no

peace.

When Megan first returned, Bethan had fought with him and even threatened to end her life.

Back then, he’d found her hysterical, too emotional, and not composed enough.

Now, she was utterly calm-no tears, no fights, no noise.

But he wasn’t happy. Instead, a hollow panic gnawed at him, a sense that everything was off.

When Bethan asked for her phone, Hugh got up to fetch

She texted her parents that she and Hugh were away in éhfeago and would return a few days later.

For the next few days, she focused on recovering in the hospital.

She needed to heal fast. She still had work to do.

Hugh stayed by her side, never leaving the hospital.

A few days later, Bethan insisted on being discharged.

While Hugh went to handle the discharge paperwork, Megan arrived.
