Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 169

Chapter 169 What Are You Doing?

Rachel quickly ushered Hudson out, making an excuse to leave.

“Hugh, sit down. I’ll get you some water,” Megan offered eagerly, turning to the kitchen.

Before she could move, Hugh’s hand shot out, clamping firmly around her neck.

Megan froze, pale with shock. “Hugh, what are you doing?”

His piercing gaze sent a chill down her spine.

“What did you say to Bethan in the hospital?” he demanded, his voice deadly serious.

Megan, seeing Hugh’s anger for the first time, trembled all over.

She stammered nervously, “You’ve got it wrong! That night, Bethan got punished by your grandfather for helping me. I was grateful and wanted to visit her. I just apologized properly-nothing else!”

Hugh’s grip tightened slightly. “Megan, if you’re playing games with me, you’re not clever enough.”

Tears welled as Megan saw his suspicion. “Hugh, you know I come from nothing. I’ve been married, had miscarriages, and had a kid. No matter what, I wouldn’t dare dream of what I did six years ago!”

Hugh’s face was a storm of menace.

Megan’s legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.

Sobbing, she pleaded, “I just wanted to get on Bethan’s good side, to stop your family from targeting me. I swear I didn’t do anything!”

Hugh remained unmoved.

Megan raised her hand, swearing to the heavens. “I swear, if I ever harbor any improper thoughts about you, let my son die immediately!”

Slowly, Hugh loosened his grip, and Megan scrambled

away.

If it weren’t for keeping Hugh’s guilt alive-reminding him of the six years of torment she endured for him- she’d have gotten rid of Hudson long ago.

Hugh adjusted the cuffs of his shirt.

He reminded Megan, his tone flat and cold, “I acknowledged Hudson only so my grandfather wouldn’t target you two-so you could have a place to live in New York.”

Megan nodded, her panic barely contained.

“I’m helping you because of how much you sacrificed for me these past six years,” Hugh continued.

Megan bit her lip, nodding again.

“I’ll keep my promises to you,” Hugh said, “but only if you stay in line.”

With that, he turned and left.

Megan stood trembling, collapsing onto the floor as the door clicked shut, her body drained.

It seemed that aligning with Bethan was the right move.

One day, she’d stand openly by Hugh’s side as his wife.

Near nine that evening. Hugh waited downstairs at Bethan’s parents’ apartment building

When Bethan emerged from the elevator, he stubbed out his cigarette.

He adjusted the coat around her shoulders, pulling her into his arms.

“Cold?” he asked softly.

The faint scent of tobacco hit Bethan, making her frown.

Glancing up, she spotted three shadows in the window and understood why Hugh held her close instead of heading to the car.

He wanted her parents and Barry to see they were doing fine.

Bethan quietly pushed him away.

“My family’s been bankrupt for years, no match for yours. Even if you killed me right now, my family couldn’t do a thing to you. There’s no need to put on this show,” she said evenly.

Hugh stared at her, offering no explanation.

“Tomorrow’s your first official day at work,” he said. “Get

some rest.”

The next morning, Bethan rose early.

She chose a low-key winter outfit and light makeup.

It was her first day at the Dixon family’s private hospital, and she wanted to make a good impression on her new colleagues.

In the walk-in closet, she and Hugh stood side by side at the full-length mirror, adjusting their outfits.

Hugh bent to pick up a hair tie that had fallen by her feet.

Bethan’s eyes landed on the tie in his hand. She took it and deftly tied his necktie for him.

Neither mentioned the tension; they moved in silent understanding.

As Bethan grabbed her bag to leave, Hugh caught her wrist, pulling her back.

Their eyes met in silence. Bethan immediately

understood his look.

She tiptoed and brushed a kiss against the corner of his

mouth.

Hugh responded by wrapping his arms around her.
