“Dr. Olsen, just drop me off up ahead. I’ll grab a cab.”

Bethan waved him off with a warm smile. “Nonsense. Mr. Dixon’s covering our travel costs. Your wife just had a baby- she needs you home. Let me drive you; it’ll save you some time. We’re colleagues, after all—that’s what we should do.”
Despite his protests, Bethan dropped Darnley at his place before heading home.
When she came back, she spotted Hugh on the balcony, his silhouette framed against the night as he spoke into his phone.
In the dining room, she spotted a covered plate on the table. She touched it and found it still warm.
But she had no appetite.
After a quick shower, she gathered her things, ready to move into the spare bedroom next door.
Hugh blocked her at the bedroom door.
His face was stern as he snatched the pillow from her arms, then gripped her arm and pulled her back inside.

Bethan held out her hand and said casually, “Fine. If you show me your medical results, we don’t have to split rooms.
Hugh pressed her hand to his chest. “I’m right here. If you think I’m sick, check me yourself.”
Bethan gave a short laugh. “You expect me to risk my health? Do I look that stupid?”
She yanked her hand free, grabbed the pillow, and turned to
Hugh’s arms circled her waist, halting her.
“Why’d you hang up on me today?”
Bethan sighed, knowing this clash was inevitable.
She pushed him away and sank onto the bed’s edge, her voice cool.
“Alright, Hugh. How do you want to hash this out tonight?”
Hugh frowned deeply. “I’m trying to talk to you, not start a fight.”
Bethan’s laugh was sharp and scornful. “Let me guess-

Megan’s been murmuring more sweet lies in your ear?”
Their eyes locked, Hugh’s face darkening.

“If that’s what you choose to believe,” he said tightly, “so be it.”
Bethan’s lips twisted into a cold sneer.
“This morning, in the hospital parking lot, why’d you humiliate Megan with money and egg on your colleague to beat her?”
Bethan instantly pieced together what had happened.
But she didn’t bother defending herself.
She flung the pillow aside, stood up, and stepped right up to Hugh.
Looking him dead in the eyes, she said, “She chose to be your mistress, didn’t she? All for the cash, right?”
Her voice hardened. “Yes, I hit her. So what? If you feel sorry for her, then go ahead and hit me back. I’m standing right here.”
Faced with this unyielding version of Bethan, Hugh felt completely at a loss.

Bethan’s temper flared, her frustration boiling over.

Her eyes brimmed with angry tears as she shoved him hard.
“Is it me making things worse,” she demanded, “or is it you two pushing me past my limit? You know damn well who’s at fault!”
Bethan snatched up her pillow, her eyes turning icy cold. “From now on, we’re living separately!”
She stormed toward the door, but Hugh enveloped her in his
arms.
Bethan thrashed with all her might. “Don’t touch me!”
Hugh sighed heavily, “Fine. I’ll take the couch.”
He released her, picked up the fallen pillow, placed it gently on the bed, and left the room.
Bethan locked the door, collapsed onto the bed, and buried her face in the blankets, exhaustion claiming her.
Deep into the night, Hugh stood alone on the balcony, cigarette smoke curling into the dark.

Jacob arrived, handing over a phone.

“Mr. Cavill,” he reported, “even the nearest camera is still quite a distance away. The footage is clear enough visually, but the external microphone only picks up sound within 20 feet. Ms. Ridley and Mrs. Cavill were speaking too softly-we couldn’t extract any of their conversation.”
He added, “The woman who clashed with Ms. Ridley isn’t hospital staff. She’s a relative of a patient in the inpatient ward. She has no connection to Mrs. Cavill.”
After Jacob left, Hugh stayed alone on the balcony, smoking one cigarette after another.
The woman who’d clashed with Megan wasn’t Bethan’s colleague.
