Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 220

Chapter 220 My Huggie Died Last Summer

“I know you’re holding a grudge,” Andy said, “but you’ve just returned to New York. You don’t understand the lay of the land.”

He continued, his voice heavy with warning. “Of New York’s eight prominent families, the Kroos and Cavill families are tightly intertwined, their interests bound as one. The Martin family has grown close to the Cavills in recent years, and the Dixons are tied to the Martins through marriage. These four families are a web. Then there are the other families, each with their own tangled alliances.”

Andy’s eyes narrowed. “Hugh might seem polished and reserved, but he’s ruthless when crossed, even more so than his grandfather in his prime. Since he took over the Cavill Group, he has built a commercial empire in just a few years, cementing the Cavill family as New York’s top clan. Don’t underestimate

him.”

James let out a derisive snort.

“He can’t even keep his own woman in check, and you’re trying to make me believe he’s formidable?”

Andy shot him a warning look before turning and leaving the 45

room.

By the time Andy reached the bottom of the stairs, Bethan and Hugh were already gone.

Back home, Bethan headed straight for the spare bedroom.

Hugh blocked her at the door.

“I got the medical exam like you asked,” he said, his voice low but firm. “You’ve seen the results. Can we stop this now?”

Bethan pushed past him. “STDs can have incubation periods ranging from days to months. Even if your results look clean for now, I’m not risking my health.”

Their eyes locked, Hugh visibly struggling to keep his temper in check. “I’ll sleep on the couch,” he said.

Bethan nodded. “Fine.”

After washing up, Bethan went through her skincare routine, preparing for bed.

Noticing Hugh lingering in the bedroom, she hesitated to climb under the covers.

He approached her, pulling out his phone and deleting all of Megan’s contact information right in front of her.

Bethan stared at him, clearly thinking he was losing it.

Looking into her eyes, Hugh said, “That day at the restaurant, I messed up. I’m sorry.”

Bethan’s jaw practically dropped.

In the twenty-plus years she’d known him, this was the first time she’d ever heard Hugh apologize.

She couldn’t help herself. “Hugh, did Megan cheat on you or something?”

His face darkened slightly.

“Bethan,” he said, his voice heavy, “I know I’ve let you down, and you’re hurting. Let’s put the past behind us, okay? I won’t let Megan make you feel insecure anymore. Can we just be okay?”

Seeing her frown deepen in silence, he softened his tone, almost pleading. “The Kroos family is holding a banquet tomorrow night. Come with me.”

Bethan’s eyes lit up with sudden clarity. “Oh, so that’s what this is about. All this groveling just to get me to play arm candy for

you?”

Hugh shook his head, earnest. “Every word I said tonight came from the heart. If you really don’t want to go, I won’t push you.”

Bethan let out a dry, “Oh, okay. Then I’m not going.”

Hugh bit back his frustration, saying nothing more.

He pulled a hair tie from his pocket and held it out to her.

“I noticed your old one broke by the sink this morning, so I got you this. It’s got the bow you love.”

Bethan didn’t take it.

“It’s not that I love bows,” she said coolly. “I liked them because Huggie gave me one. That’s why.”

Hugh’s gaze softened, a flicker of emotion stirring in his eyes.

“Bethy,” he murmured.

He knew she still cared, somewhere deep down.

“But you,” Bethan continued, her voice steady, “you’re Megan’s lover now. You’re her son’s father. I can’t accept gifts from a man whose heart belongs to someone else.”

Their eyes locked, the air thick with unspoken pain.

Hugh’s eyes reddened as he struggled to speak, “Bethy, I’m still your Huggie. I haven’t changed.”

Bethan turned her back to him. “My Huggie died last summer. I waited a month for his body to show up. You’re not him.”

With that, she climbed into bed and switched off the light.

Hugh stood frozen, the weight of her words crushing him as he closed his eyes in quiet agony.

The next afternoon, Bethan arrived at Keating Mansion right on schedule.

James handed her an invitation. “Got plans tonight? Come with me to a banquet.”

Bethan recalled Hugh’s mention of the event the previous evening.
