Chapter 226 A Gamble

She had been losing all afternoon. There was no way she’d give up her one chance to win.
Arthur, who had once lost a fortune to Hugh on a cruise ship, shot to his feet. “I’m not playing against you.”
Mason shook his head as well. “Playing with Bethan is for fun. Playing with you is gambling. Forget it.”
If Hugh joined the table, none of them would survive the night.
James leaned back, smiling faintly, “I wouldn’t mind testing my skills against Mr. Cavill.”
Bethan immediately looped her arm through Hugh’s and tugged him toward the bedroom. “Jemma made your favorite dishes. Go take a shower and change. Dinner will be ready
soon.”
Hugh stopped at the doorway, his gaze sweeping across the
group.
“Was this dinner made for me?” he asked dryly.
Bethan forced a smile. “Of course. I had it prepared especially for you. They’re just here to keep you company while you eat:49

Her smile was perfunctory. His face was dark and unreadable.
Bethan pushed him toward the bathroom, then turned back to rejoin the game.
Mason leaned back in his chair and said to James, “Mr. Keating, you should think about moving into this building. That way, playing bridge would be much easier.”
Arthur cut in, “There aren’t any units left. The only one available is on the eighteenth floor. But something bad happened there. No one will touch it.”
James, a cigarette tucked between his lips, tapped his fingers. against the edge of the table, his sharp eyes narrowing.
He said evenly, “For others, the eighteenth floor of hell is filled with restless ghosts. For me, it’s where lives are taken. There’s nothing unlucky about it.”
Mason chuckled, “Then move in and keep the place safe for the rest of us. With you here, no evil spirit would dare come close.”
The three men continued their banter while Bethan silently calculated her cards.

James finally sighed, spread his hand flat across the table, and

declared, “Contract made.”
Bethan pouted, her eyelids drooping instantly.

Just then, Hugh came out of the bathroom. Mason quickly pushed his cards away. “Let’s eat.”

Bethan moved to wheel James toward the dining room, but Hugh stepped forward first. “I’ll do it.”
Barry beat him to it, grabbing the handles of James’ wheelchair and steering him toward the dining room.
Hugh’s eyes followed them, dark and sharp. “Since when did Barry get so close to them?” he asked Bethan.
She answered lightly, “You’ve been gone. They’ve been around playing cards these past few days. That’s how they got acquainted.”
Hugh masked his expression and pulled his gaze back.
He turned to her. “Your skills aren’t much, but your addiction’s serious. How much have you lost?”
Bethan grinned sheepishly. “We play ten dollars a game. It’s nothing.”

for less than a hundred million. You really think they’re playing ten-dollar rounds with you?”
Bethan rolled her eyes. “I may not win at cards, but I can count. Don’t underestimate me.”
Seeing her flare up, Hugh instinctively softened his expression.
He took her hand. “I’m not blaming you. I just want you to know-against the three of them, almost no one wins.”
Bethan coolly pulled her hand back and followed him into the dining room.
That morning, she had brushed him off over the phone, claiming she’d be busy until late.
Who would have guessed he’d show up unannounced, catching her mid-card game with four men and yet, he wasn’t angry.
That in itself was abnormal.
One woman, five men, sitting down for dinner. The atmosphere was lively, to say the least.
Arthur took the lead, pouring James a drink. “Mr. Keating, relax and enjoy yourself. Treat this like your home.”

Seated at the table, Hugh’s face remained expressionless, but his eyes were fixed on Arthur and Mason.
Those two really didn’t know their place.
When Barry refused to touch the fish, Hugh reminded him, “You’re still growing. No picky eating.”
Barry shot him a disdainful look and picked up a rib instead.
