Jacob swallowed hard before explaining. “Mr. Cavill, Shawn and Ms. Ridley’s ex-husband’s sister were underage when they got together-no marriage certificate. By the time Leonard died, both the sister and Shawn had married other people, had kids, and were living in different cities. We overlooked the connection.”

Jacob pressed on. “Mr. Cavill, Leonard’s case is officially closed, it happened in another country, and it was years ago. Plus, Ms. Ridley’s already back in her home country. We can’t confirm yet that Leonard’s death is directly connected to Ms. Ridley.”

Hugh slowly stood up. “Keep digging.”

Years ago, Harvey had threatened both him and Megan.

If Hugh insisted on staying with Megan, Harvey would cut him off entirely and leave the Cavill family

inheritance to Leonard-his half-brother.

For Hugh to secure his place as the Cavill heir, Megan had sacrificed herself and married someone abroad. 1/7

A few hours later, he left work early and headed home.

Jemma was busy in the kitchen making dinner when she came over to greet him.

Hugh asked, “Has Bethan come back yet?”

Jemma said she hadn’t. Hugh walked into the master bedroom’s walk-in closet.

He pulled out a school uniform jacket from the very bottom of the wardrobe.

When he was little, he’d overheard Fiona and Ryan fighting. That was how he found out Ryan had cheated, and he had a half-brother he’d never met.

In his memories, he hated this brother he’d never seen.

Because of him, constant fighting had torn their happy family apart.

He remembered it was his sophomore year, during the College basketball tournament. The weather was perfect48

Up in the bleachers, some kid was cheering him on like crazy, practically bouncing out of his seat.

After the game, a teenager in a school uniform ran up to him and handed him a bottle of water.

The kid took off his uniform jacket and spread it on the grass for Hugh to sit on.

He was tall and skinny, wearing a white dress shirt. He flashed a grin showing his two front teeth and said, “Hi, I’m Leonard. I’m your brother.”

Like he was afraid Hugh would reject him, Leonard quickly waved his hands before Hugh could say anything. “Hugh, don’t be mad, okay? My mom told me I had a brother, and I just wanted to meet you. I told her I was coming back to visit my old teacher. I’ll leave right after I see you-I’m not here to take anything away from you.”

At that moment, Hugh realized that having a little brother might not be as terrible as he’d imagined.

When Leonard was leaving, he looked up and asked, 17:48

“Hugh, when I grow up, can I come back to see you?”

Something made Hugh nod without thinking.

Leonard stood there in the sunlight, showing his two little fangs as he grinned from ear to ear.

When Leonard left, he gave Hugh a blue and white school uniform jacket.

Four years later, the Cavill family got the news that Leonard had died in an accident.

He died in a foreign country, during the winter of his eighteenth year.

Just hours before that, Hugh had received a message

from Leonard.

Leonard told him that after tomorrow, he’d be eighteen.

He said he would buy his plane ticket and fly home to see Hugh.

Hearing familiar footsteps outside, Hugh quickly put the school uniform back in the closet.

If there was more to Leonard’s death than met the eye, Hugh would dig until he found the truth. He owed Leonard that much—their bond as brothers demanded nothing less.

When Bethan saw Hugh leave the walk-in closet, something was clearly wrong with his face.

She hesitated for a moment, then turned away without acknowledging him.

Hugh noticed how cold Bethan was being toward him. He didn’t say anything-just went to the balcony to smoke in brooding silence.

After Bethan finished her shower and exited the bathroom, she sat at her vanity table working on a craft project.

Hugh walked in and approached her.
