Chapter 269 Do You Know What You’re Doing?
After work, Hugh returned to Cavill Manor.
He had the kitchen prepare Bethan’s favorite dishes and paced by the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Logan watched as Bethan’s car pulled in. Hugh grabbed an umbrella and headed out, making Logan sigh.
Hugh escorted Bethan into the living room.
Ryan, seeing her, barked, “You little punk, after what you did to my father, you’ve got the nerve to show up?”
Bethan fired back, “Isn’t that Hugh’s fault?”
Her words left Ryan’s face purple with rage.
Hugh ushered Bethan toward Fiona’s room.
Fiona, sighing on the sitting room couch, perked up slightly when Bethan entered.

Bethan glanced at Hugh. “Out.”

He pointed at himself. “Me?”
Fiona shot him a warning glare. “Get out.”
Hugh’s face darkened as he left.
“Fiona, you should get a divorce,” Bethan said.

Hugh had barely lifted a foot to walk away when Bethan’s words detonated like a bomb.
He froze, then spun back. He reached the doorway, but Bethan closed it in his face.
Over half an hour later, Bethan and Fiona finally emerged together.
Hugh cautiously studied their faces.
Fiona said, “If you’re not staying for dinner, go rest. Take care of yourself.”
Hugh walked Bethan out with the umbrella. “It’s raining hard. I’ll drive you back.”
Béthan, silent, headed for her car. Hugh followed, holding

He grabbed her hand as she reached for the door.
“Bethan, we need to talk,” he said.

She looked around at the rain-soaked garden. “Whatever you want to say, say it now.”
Hugh’s brow furrowed.
“How could you push my mother to divorce? Do you have any idea what you’re doing?”
Bethan shot back, “Your father treats her like dirt. I told her to leave him—so what? It’s not like I encouraged her to cheat on him.”
“They’ve fought their whole lives,” Hugh muttered, voice tight. “That’s just how they are. Divorce isn’t even possible.”
Bethan shoved him away.
Her face hardened. “Hugh, you know damn well the only reason your mother stayed when she was young was because of you and Gwen. She was bullied by your father and grandfather, but she endured for her children. 17:56

mom’s wronged. But you, her son, do nothing. What gives you the right to talk like that?”
Seeing her emotions flare, Hugh softened. “Alright, don’t get upset. Let’s drop it.”
Bethan’s fury ebbed into regret.
She knew Hugh had been raised under Harvey’s shadow, shaped by years of shouting and fights at home. He’d grown numb, detached.
That numbness had seeped into their marriage, too.
Every time they argued, Hugh stayed silent and avoided confrontation.
It was ingrained in his bones-something she could never change, no matter how angry she got.
Switching topics, Hugh said, “My sleep’s been bad lately. Do you still have those meds you made for me?”
Bethan eyed the fatigue in his face, frowning.

After a pause, she said, “If you’re sick, go to a doctor.”
Hugh grabbed her wrist as she opened the car door. “When Arthur wasn’t feeling well in the middle of the night, you rushed to bring him medicine. Are our three years of marriage worth less than some patient?”
Bethan shook him off, her face cold. “You’re right. They’re not worth as much.”
With that, she slid into the driver’s seat and drove off.
Fiona stood at the living room door, watching Bethan’s car leave Cavill Manor. Hugh stood dazed in the garden, rain soaking him.
She knew he was full of regret.
Heart aching yet helpless, Fiona said, “Logan, call Hugh in. I need to talk to him.”
In the living room on the first floor of Cavill Manor, Fiona poured a cup of coffee for Hugh.
Hugh placed his phone on the table and said, “Mom, don’t take Bethan’s words to heart.”
